1. Did the option to select an encryption algorithm get removed from the installer or did I miss it (I checked twice)? Since I'm using hardware without AES acceleration, I prefer Twofish over AES since it's ~30% faster.

2. After the second boot into the installed system, the two Desktop icons - I think they are "MX Help" and "MX Manual" disappear.

3. I have to manually activate and set my keyboard layout after installing which might confuse new users. Is this intended?

4a. when trying to install "wine" from popular apps in MXPI I get this dependency error

Code: Select all

4b. when trying to install "wine-staging" from MXPI active repositories I get a dependency error for wine-gecko.

Code: Select all

5. after installing "wine" (8.0~repack4 stable version) from MXPI, then creating a wineprefix, then installing "wine32" from terminal I get "wine: could not load kernel32.dll, status c0000135" when trying to launch winecfg. This is a bug not related to MX and fixed by deleting the wineprefix. The "inaccuracy" might me that wine32 is not installed by default when installing wine, but this is probably also out of the scope of MX development, since these are the Debian repos.

6. Minor: neofetch is only showing "MX x86_64" as OS name, not the full "MX 23 Libretto". This is probably intended.
EDIT: neofetch apparently is not showing number of packages either. Might be a misconfiguration?
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

This was removed around two years ago based on the feedback from a survey on this forum, and a survey on the antiX forum as very few (if any) people actually used it, and more importantly, this can now be achieved by installing to a pre-existing LUKS container.
The encryption algorithm settings were added when installing to pre-existing LUKS containers was not supported. Now that the installer supports installing to pre-existing LVM and LUKS containers, you can now manually create an encrypted container with the desired parameters with cryptsetup luksFormat, open it up with cryptsetup open, and then the installer will see it in the custom partition setup in the Virtual Devices section.

Alright, sounds good. I'm familiar with cryptsetup, so that's no problem.

Let's continue.

7. when trying to install "veracrypt" from MXPI popular apps I get the following error. The package is not present in a repository.

Code: Select all

Unable to apply some actions, aborting
Couldn't find any package matching "veracrypt", but there are 26 packages which contain "veracrypt" in their description:
8. David Batch processor crashes GIMP when closing it (after installing GIMP Full from MXPI popular apps), probably not a MX problem, but a problem of the plugin.

9. I used to install Discord and Skype as flatpaks. How are they installed from MXPI popular apps? I noticed it downloads a deb file and then installs it manually. Do I still get updates that way?

EDIT:

10. fsearch is not in the repositories. I think it is/was in the MX 19 repos. Did it get removed?

Overall I have to say, the beta runs really well. Autostart for both Skype and Discord do work properly (didn't work with the flatpaks in MX19, but was also no big issue for me), editing boot options worked, uninstalling Thunderbird and LibreOffice worked. Keyring recognition works (keyring gets the user password as its password) for Google Chrome and Discord.

I also installed the Faba icon theme and switched the WM theme to Greybird-mx and I'm feeling at home already :number1: I will keep mx-comfort for the window frames, though. Really like the unintrusive design. I'm looking forward to the final release.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I think it is retaining elements that need to be purged. Have a go at completely resetting your BIOS then re-enable/disable those things you need to get it working with Linux.
Thanks for the advice, but I reset the bios a couple of times when I first encountered the reboot loop with MX 21 and it made no difference. I only mentioned this glitch as a sort of "heads up" to the others here who have the same laptop. I also suspect that the fault that is the cause is so obscure, that it's not worth anybody's time to track down.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

they shouldn't unless the desktop crashed or they were removed from the home folder.
3. I have to manually activate and set my keyboard layout after installing which might confuse new users. Is this intended?
all the previous methods of setting keyboard config pre-install (even pre-boot of the live-usb) are still present.

thanks for catching those mx-pi entries (wine and veracrypt).

My install has failed twice. Using custom formatting, defining root & swap partitions and labelling root partition 'MX23-B1'. On boot gives error 'No such device'. UUID doesn't seem to appear in minstall.log.

1. If I put the dock on autohide, the portion showing is too thin (apparently near zero) to catch with the cursor--which defeats the whole purpose. Unsure ATM if that is just this machine.
2. As Melber (?) mentioned, dockmaker is taller than the screen and the size can't be changed in the usual manner (Alt+RightClick). Putting the 4 new elements into two columns would probably solve it for this resolution.
