Multiple Displays

#1 Post by hughbert »

I just got a new(ish) laptop and was wondering if there is a way to get multiple displays working with 21.3 using the HDMI output of the laptop. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Do you have a monitor, and cable? Have you tried hooking them up?

If not, that's the place to start. Get an HDMI capable monitor and HDMI cable.
Goto Settings - Display, and configure your two monitors, (the lappy and the external)

Yes, I plugged it into the HDMI port and MX doesn't see it.

According to your laptop's online manual page 97 the key combination of FN and then F7 is identified as "switching between monitor and projector".

Likely when saying 'projector' they are referring to your HDMI output. Most laptops have multiple options with that key combination, not just 2 as the text implies:

1) Monitor only
2) projector only
3) monitor & projector

Yes, it gives me the options; switch to external, switch to internal, extend to left, extend to right, unify output.....none of them change anything while using MX 21.3.

What does your Display dialog look like? Mirror unchecked?

Edit: Bad cable? Are the monitor and cable known to work?

New cable. Tested with windows. My display setting are different from yours, maybe because I'm using Plasma? I don't have a mirror setting. I also tried with MX live usb and it doesn't respond either and it also doesn't have the mirror setting in the display options..

I suppose that xrandr works with KDE so you may want to use xrandr to see if your laptop recognizes the HDMI.
Link may not be the best, just one of the first I stumbled upon: https://linuxhint.com/xrandr-linux-commands/

I'm not familiar with KDE or Plasma, but in Xfce, I wounldn't check .
Automatically enable profiles when new display is connected because for me, if set incorrectly, it automatically sets it incorrectly – maybe something similar in KDE.

So in Xfce, Display, and maybe once recognized and working, later see MX Tweak>Display - - Choose Display for xrandr tweaks.

Also, and I do not understand it, but in Xfce, the position - therefore moving 2D (l,r,u,d) – of the representative display rectangles in Display alters how the monitors are displayed, represented, shown or something.

Sorry no help with KDE

Just a guess, something to do with the lappy's configuration, "BIOS setting, check next, I would." -Yoda
