Most recent Thunderbird Release

#1 Post by amsel73 »

Recently serious flaws from Thunderbird were fixed. MX Test Repo offers Thunderbird 102.6.0-1. By now (2/24/2023) the most current Version is 102.8.0 (see: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/releases/). How can I ensure that the most security-fixed version is installed on my machine?
Thank you

Get it as Flatpak or download directly from their site?

Thunderbird have a very poor blog for offering latest news.
Must be hard to write a few lines...
And they wonder why people aren't too keen about their app.

You can build it yourself by downloading, and then I wager using make-make install.

I just wait till the MX Team offers a newer fixed version, they know what they are doing (as opposed to yours truly who knows diddly squat about building something herself, other than what she just stated)

Oh boy, that is a good but hard question. :-)

I can only contribute with some of my general thoughts.

Can you be sure a newer version will be more secure.?
If the update is only about security updates hopefully yes, but if it is an upgrade with new features as well then maybe most likely no.

What version is most interesting for hackers to attack.?
I guess the version with most users and the newest.

Like Eadwine Rose I would not automatically run after the newest version but instead trust the older version that comes with the distro and is continuously (day and night!) being nursed by the community. :-)

Also downgrading the database is not all easy and that could be another reason for not being too busy about installing a new not well tested version.

Most of the security issues I have seen in the release notes notes are:
a) windows driven
b) browser related.

I strongly suggest people follow good security polices regarding being careful with ALL incoming emails - always! But if your concerned with what is what in thunderbird, there are great release notes about what version fixes what. (And also would tell you what the OLDER versions suffer from too! )

More good reading here:
https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/releases/

And, if your really concerned about making sure to run the latest Thunderbird, you can always install from their location and run from the Thunderbird channel. (although yes, I believe you are better to run from MX repo's !)
*QSI = Quick System Info from menu (Copy for Forum)
*MXPI = MX Package Installer
*Please check the solved checkbox on the post that solved it.
*Linux -This is the way!

Related, not really, that is a totally different question. Please don't use others' topics to groom for your own, thanks.

Thank you all for your replies.

By now, the most recent Thunderbird release is offered by the MX Testing Repository. Thank you very much!!

For my perspective, I think the most recent release must be the most secure (altough I don't have a proof for that opinion...).

Regards, R.

You do know about the expression: take old bugs out, put new bugs in?

For questions/concerns about TB release's security, please head over to the TB website.

MX offers the latest in Test as time permits, being a small team and all, not everything can be done right as TB poops out a newer version. Patience is key, thanks.
