I tried to fade the background out a bit to de emphasize it, but not sure I liked it. ( I can post if anyone would like to see it.)

Several MX versions ago there was a B/W image in the background of the login screen, then it transformed to color when you logged in and the wallpaper came up. I was like at the beginning of the Wizard of Oz. It was a stunning first impression.

it is a great first impression. and becomes very jarring as soon as the default wallpaper is changed

Yes, I will second this. It was awesome. It never bothered me when the wallpaper was changed, but maybe that is me *shrug*
