MX-Linux 21 Lost internet connection

#1 Post by addy »

Hi Guys,
Firstly i love MX-Linux 21 wildflower after transitioning from Linux mint, however after a few weeks i have experienced loss of internet twice and i am not sure why this is happening. After looking at this issue via forums a Kernal issue was mentioned so i put my USB stick back in and in MX USB Live Kernal updater followed the instructions and it worked, that was yesterday today it has stopped working again.
I know this issue has happened with others but not sure where to go now, any help would be appreciated, system info below hope i have done it right?
I noticed in the network assistant there is no ip address showing in the external ip address, and in the status it is blank. If you require any more info please let me know

It shows driver loaded (driver: iwlwifi) and

wlan0 state: up

So, it must be something else (device is working).

Not to solve this, but (kernel) 5.18 and 19 have reached EOL. I would install 6.1 with 2 clicks only from "MX Package Installer", the 1st tab.
______________________________________________________________

Code: Select all

echo 'nameserver 1.1.1.1' | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf
Right after that try to open a web page and tell us whether it works..

When these outages occur, are any other devices affected? I think that it's important, in these early stages, to isolate or eliminate your router and ISP as possible causes.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Thanks for all your help and advice, I tried the command you gave me and once i entered the password it came back with name server 1.1.1.1', i tried the browser and it works fine hope it stays that way. Will look at the Kernal upgrade to 6.1 as the Kernal appears to be the main issue.

So fine :)

That one was temporary just to see first. To make it permanent:

Right-click on Network icon: "Edit Connections" then edit yours, open the IPv4 tab, paste this into "Additional DNS Servers" area, save, reboot (or logout-login).

Code: Select all

1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1, 8.8.8.8
(In case you don't want Google for whatever reason, you may exclude the 8.8...)
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

This is not related to this issue, but just while you're at it: Also go to the 1st tab and check "All users may ..." and also set a higher number than 0 for priority (anything.. 3.. 5.. 10 ... )

(In case you still have such problems, we'll do it (dns) another way.)

FYI, the name server address that Huckleberry Finn had you install is for the public DNS server operated by Cloudfare. That it solved your issue is a good indication that your ISP is having DNS server issues and that there is nothing wrong with your own computer.

Code: Select all

sudo tee /etc/resolv2.conf <<!
nameserver 1.1.1.1
nameserver 1.0.0.1
nameserver 8.8.8.8
!

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/resolv.conf ; sudo ln -s /etc/resolv2.conf /etc/resolv.conf

P.S. It's normal that the terminal warns you about security when you paste the first one, just click "paste" then press Enter.

... And if you do these within your modem settings (if you like only) then it'll be valid for all users and all systems (by default) (no matter Windows, Linux and what Linux Distro etc.) that are connected to internet via that device :)
