screen rapidly oscillating between 1 and 2

#1 Post by remarkrv »

I had an issue with my MX21(xfce) desktop computer screen suddenly oscillating rapidly between screen 1 and screen 2 when I moved the mouse cursor to the screen. After opening a window, it would roll up into the bar. The only way to use the app was to go to full screen. When the cursor was on the launch panel, the oscillations stopped. The oscillation issue disappeared a day later without my intervention. I know these things don’t just go away so I thought I would post my investigation and see if someone can give me some clues so I can be prepared to resolve it next time. My computer info is listed below.

I have some USB flash drives with different linux distros installed and a USB hard drive with MX21 installed. All the flash drives have the default nouveau video driver installed and the external hard drive with MX21 OS has a nvidia driver installed. All systems had xfce desktops. I booted into all drives several times with the following results.

MX21 iso live media-flash drive: oscillations
MX21 installed-flash drive: oscillations
Spiral-flash drive: oscillations
Mint-flash drive: no issues
Zorin-flash drive: no issues
Lite-flash drive: no issues
MX21-ext hard drive: no issues

so, some of the flash drives booted and ran ok and some didn’t. The only MX21 drive that booted and ran ok was the external hard drive with the nvidia driver. I successfully booted two laptop computers with all the USB drives.

Logically, I think it’s a video driver issue, but some distros worked and some didn’t, using the default drivers. The external hard drive with the nvidia driver installed, booted and ran without any issues. I didn’t get a chance to install the nvidia drivers on the internal hard drive when it was acting up. It’s not heat related because the issue occurred after being powered down for over 12 hours. I didn’t install anything or update after the issue started. I was using the computer for a couple of hours earlier with the external USB hard drive and nvidia driver.

Right now the computer is working ok, but I would be interested in any comments and suggestions on what could have initiated the problem and why it could have disappeared.

Your Nvidia video card is using the 'nouveau' driver. You should use the Nvidia Driver Installer located in MX Tools to install Nvidia's proprietary driver instead. Then see if your issue is fixed.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

It may be kernel related as Nouveau version is the Kernel version:

( ... driver: nouveau v: kernel )

MX21 iso live media-flash drive: oscillations 5.10
Spiral-flash drive: oscillations 5.10

Mint-flash drive: no issues 5.15
Zorin-flash drive: no issues 5.15
Lite-flash drive: no issues 5.15

If you like, you can try (just to see) with the AHS version on live session that has 6.0 kernel, (or remaster the default MX installing 5.15 from MXPI)
