Cannot reinstall Nvidia drivers

#1 Post by Nobluesky »

Hello,
I'm a long time MX user, and I'm facing a very annoying problem I cannot solve.

I have an MX 21.3 install that works well on my desktop. I uninstalled Nvidia stable drivers because I wanted to test Nouveau again. I used the

Code: Select all

sudo ddm-mx -p nvidia
command and rebooted. And it works well with Nouveau, except second monitor isn't detected and video playback in Firefox has tearing and uses 10% CPU.

No big deal I say to myself, I'll reinstall the driver with Nvidia driver installer built in MX. But it fails and boots to a blinking cursor. I tell myself again, no big deal, I'll fix that by opening the console. But I cannot open it with ctrl+alt+f1, it stays on the blinking cursor despite the HDD led activity blinking/caps lock working.

I tried reinstalling from a snapshot I made before the incident, and it boots normally, but display resolution on live system is broken due to the fact Nvidia driver is installed. So I installed MX from the assistant, rebooted to a blinking cursor again, BUT this time ctrl+alt+f1 allows me to enter the console. I then tried to find

Code: Select all

/etc/X11/xorg.conf
but it wasn't there, only an X11 directory in /etc .
I ended up running

Code: Select all

sudo ddm-mx -p nvidia
again and restored a perfectly working system with Nouveau. Tried reinstalling Nvidia stable drivers and I went straight back into the loop, blinking cursor at reboot, console not accessible, forced to reinstall from snapshot.

Note 1 : Last update on Nvidia driver went on without any issue.
Note 2 : Nvidia driver issue when uninstalled and reinstalled has always been there, I just forgot about it leading to the current issue. I no longer have a snapshot made before I installed Nvidia drivers, that worked perfectly. First install of Nvidia drivers always works.

My system uses MBR to avoid messing with my Windows drive (EFI supports both legacy and EFI boot, wasn't an issue so far).
Here is my system report :

nvidia-340 driver on Ubuntu 20.04
https://9to5answer.com/nvidia-340-drive ... untu-20-04
Generally, nvidia 340 driver installation I usually reference this article.

Code: Select all

sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic
This is the important part.

I don't know if it will help in your case, but
I had a hard time too, but this command worked very well.

Sorry if it's not 340.
Your "GeForce GT 1030"'s driveris might newer version.
In the world filled desire,
I seek only essence, serve for MX.
I just needing only ideal in the art at all.
I want to protect place of rest called MX LINUX. :coffee:

is that log edited? I see the removal, but not the reinstall attempt.

510.108.03-2~mx21+1 is the current version.

I had to reinstall the snapshot to get a running system. I'll reinstall drivers and get you the log with a live USB.

I'm going to suggest install mx-debian-firmware, then apt install -f

for whatever reason, your installation of the nvidia driver isn't quite finishing.

What happens when you load up a persistent LiveUSB of MX and install the Nvidia drivers there?
