When a machine fails to boot from our live USB

#1 Post by m_pav »

I have a used 2020 Acer Swift 3 that I just acquired and it has been the first machine I've had that would not boot our fully featured Live-USB made with our MX-Live USB Maker tool.
The Acer BIOS F12 boot selection screen shows 2 bootable options when I start the machine with a MX Linux Live USB inserted.
  • Linpus Lite
  • Windows
When I selected the Linpus Lite device, it was ignored and I was greeted with Windows, this was the same for every Live USB I tried, both fresh and well used, all were ignored.

Steps I did to prepare for dual-boot:
Disabled Fast Boot in both the BIOS and within the Windows OS,
Disabled Secure Boot within the BIOS, and,
Trying another Live system type, namely, Ventoy

The Acer BIOS sees them as a Linpus Lite device, but it seemed nothing I did would get it to boot, it just went straight to Windows.

That's when I thought I should revisit our MX-LUM and make another Live-USB, but this time, with only 3 extra clicks, use the Advanced Options to set the Live-USB up with a GPT Partition structure instead of the older MS-DOS system. Well it worked a charm.

The moral of this story, it's best to match the type of Live USB with the machine you're intending to use it on. We make it incredibly easy when using our MX Live-USB Maker to use either the age old MS-DOS type partition structure which is good for most machines, or the newer and more capable GPT partitioning structure, which is better suited to machines built from 2011-2012 and later, but will not boot on older hardware.
