Why my Asus K40I & K40IN freeze frequently with MX21? [canceled]

#1 Post by ldsemerchen »

I installed MX on a lot of computers and it worked perfect but 2 notebooks: Asus K40I and K40IN.
It freeze frequently and takes me 30 times longer to handle a simple thing such as upgrade, open a terminal etc. Everything.
It happened with new version of MX Linux. In the same time, it worked well and smooth as I installed Sparky Linux which also based on Debian stable.
I don't know why. I want my machine with the same MX. But if I can't find the reason, I can't install MX on them.

Distro: LDSMX-21.2.1

You can try with antiX 4.19 (even antiX 4.9) kernel from "MX Package Installer". It/they will be under "Advanced Options" on grub to boot with.

You might try installing the nvidia drivers with the Nvidia Driver Installer in the MX menu.
I also notice they both appear to be running a little hot for only being on a few minutes (6min & 12 min by the QSI). I'd check them for dust clogging the airways. The CPUs could be being throttled.

Dell Inspiron 15, AMD Ryzen 7 2700u (quad core). Sabrent 500GB nvme, Seagate 1TB

I made my own respin from MX for sharing.
If it's the problem of kernel, why Sparky won't 'freeze'? They are the same kernel version.
I also tried booting from SysVinit to Systemd, still the same.
Maybe I can try to downgrade or upgrade the kernel for testing. Thanks!

I don't like Nvidia at all. I always use the original driver. When boot from live USB, it's better and smooth.
After installing to SSD, it freeze few seconds every few seconds. So it's hard to operate it. Lag.
But the same machine with Sparky is normal.
I will try another distro. for further test. Thanks!

So, we need to know if it's the same with the official MX iso.

OK. I'll install the original MX.

You can simply try on live session if you like.

Maybe it's my fault. I installed the original MX, the freeze status almost disappear. But when I do the system upgrade, it took me more than one hour to upgrade to kernel 5.10.0-20-amd64.
As I mentioned top of the post, only these 2 notebooks has such problem.

Most of that time is probably spent rebuilding dkms wireless drivers which that hardware doesn't use.
If you purge the four realtek dkms packages (rtl8812au-dkms, rtl8814au-dkms, rtl8821ce-dkms, rtl8821cu-dkms) kernel installs will go much faster.
We need to find a way to have those available on the Live system so users with those common adapters get wifi but not rebuild them automatically if the hardware isn't present.
