Ok, but they do change from 'MM' to '00'?
Switch to 00 if you can and then try it again in Ardour... I'm sorry I have to go to work offline for the day, I will check in with you this evening..

Re: AVLinux - no sound
ok I've moved on a bit with this problem but I can't say I understand what happened ...
The first three faders in Alsamixer (if I go F3 Playback) are Master, Master Mute and DSP Bypass. Master is on 100 and the next two on 00 and they won't move, for whatever reason.
After these three there's one fader says "Line", I set that one on 100 as well.
After that theres "Line Out" and Line Out 1 through 7 and these are not faders but like routing settings (if I understand correctly) and if I switch Line Out to Output 1 and Line Out 1 to Output 2, all of a sudden I hear Ardour. They were set to "Master Right" and Left, seemed logical but there was no sound.
There's nothing wrong with AVL or Ardour (as I didn't expect anyway) but my Tascam kind of accidentally turned its own knobs to some wrong values ... there's software for this device but not for Linux so I have to look through all these knobs and faders in Alsamixer.
There must still be something wrong because when i go to MXTools and "Select Sound", my Tascam is listed as default device but when I click on "Test device" (or play something with VLC) the little speakers of my laptop start squeaking ... so I haven't come to the bottom of this and would appreciate with deeply felt thanks any further advice.
I wouldn't say "Solved" to this topic yet - but with your help, I have definitely moved ahead!

Re: AVLinux - no sound
What if you press first F6, select Tascam then press F5 ?
Re: AVLinux - no sound
F3 is Playback, F4 Capture, F5 All. Only difference I can see now is that there are two "Master" Faders at the beginning, presuming one for Playback and one for Capture?
Re: AVLinux - no sound
Here (on mine) the 1st one (left-most) is the Master that controls the level of sound in general (the volume icon etc.) the other one next to it is just "Mono", I even keep it muted.
