#1 Post by GuitarGary »

Tried three times to use MX after installing from live. Can't get root to work, can't install or upgrade.

Get Authentification Failure notice.

Used 2 different ISO's

MX21 has a (to my mind) a quirk whereby the default is NOT to use the root password but the user (sudo) password.

Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/vivaldi.list
How did you enable that without root access? It doesn't come enabled on the ISO... Did you install it on Live environment and then installed to the drive?

Did you set up a root password or only the user password? There are two ways you can set the system, if you set up only a user password then there's no root password you just need to use sudo and user password to run "root" commands.

How do you get the "Authentication Failure" when you run what, and how, from GUI, from terminal?

I have MX on Another computer and had no problem
It is an earlier version

the notification comes when trying to do update, install software or make changes through MX tools
I am not very terminal literate

Yep. As aforementioned: On MX 21 just type user's pw. (it was root's up to MX21) and if you like you can change it from "MX Tweak" - "Other" tab.
