Brother Printer Problems Anew [SOLVED]

I know from my own personal experience installing my Brother all in one printer a few weeks back. If all 3 of those files are not installed from the Brother web site it won't work no matter what scripts you use.

No. Using scripts won't work. You need to use all software and configurations from the Brother web site.

Anyway, the script mentioned in the MX-wiki Printer drivers:Brother
linked to a post about Brother-Printer-Installer-Helper Script would,
AFAIK download all needed deb-packages from brother by running brother's own installer, recommended by brother at the download page.
I guess, the issue mentioned in post #1, may be related to something else.
My suggesting:
First remove any already setup printer seen within the printer setup gui.
Next let the Printer setup GUI find the printer,
and try either Debian's provided driverless printer setup,
or select the installed brother drive.
Also check the print works by visiting the printer own setup page
at
http://[ip-of-printer]
and perhaps also
CUPS own setup page at
http://localhost:631

I'm running from a Live USB, so no printers should be installed. The list of Brother printers in the setup GUI does not include my model and never has. As I stated early on, I tried that script several times with several different options, and none seemed to work. The printer is a wireless printer and always seems to give me trouble whenever I install or reinstall MX. Going directly through CUPS also does not work. As far as "Debian's provided driverless printer setup," I don't see that option available in my live version of MX-21_KDE.

Sorry that I can't help you because you are using a Live USB. If you had MX Linux installed I could help you. It shows your model on the Brother web site that I posted earlier. I went through this a few weeks back and if you don't install all 3 files it will never work. On my printer I needed to install 4 files because I have it connect through a USB. I was able to open and install the files using KDE Discover, but when I try to print a test page, it tells me to "Use 'pdftops-renderer' option (see cups-filters README file) to use Ghostscript or MuPDF for the PDF -> PostScript conversion.

Did you install CUPSwrapper printer driver (deb package) file?
Also make sure you select the printer in the settings because if you don't your printing job will be held.

Yes, I installed it. By settings, are you talking about the Settings from the Main Menu? I have the printer selected as default printer, and after installing the files and trying to print a test page, I get this message: "In use - 'The printer may not exist or is unavailable as this time.'"

This difficulty is why I have not tried before now to upgrade from MX-19.

The console shows the files installing. And when I go to /live/aufs/home/demo, it shows all of the files have downloaded, though I don't know where to look to see if they installed. If I can't test printing in Live mode, I'm not going to risk installing MX-21 and may have to look elsewhere, something I don't really want to do.

Yes, in this case getting the prineter driver from borther may be of help.

and yes, we are not mind reader to know what you have done ...
The brother-download-helper-script requires only to either add a brother model as a parameter
or to manually enter the model name when started,

Suggest., as mentioned,
first you figure out current IP-address of your wireless printer,
b/c this may change depending on wireless setting like DHCP lease-time.
Next visit printer own "home"-page http://192.168.x.x to check the IP address is valid
and your printer is responding.

Next: Use Printer SetUP GUI and select direct IP address protocol:
which is named "AppSocket/HPJetDirect"
and enter IP Adress
and port 9100
This goes straight to the printer, without any other network "magic"
Next select the installed Brother drive for your model.

When you install the files it should offer you to print a test page. Try rebooting. Also keep in mind that getting a Brother printer to work is completely different than any other printer. Using methods from other printer manufactures won't work.

I spelled out earlier what options I tried when using the script referenced in the Wiki (ipp, ipps, IP address). I also mentioned that was the script I tried. As for the IP address, I tried what I show in my old printer.conf file as well as what my wife's Window's computer shows.

When I use the installer from Brother, it does indeed offer to print a test page, but no such page prints. Aside from using what shows up in my printers.conf file and/or on my wife's computer, I'm not sure where to look for the printer's IP address since none of those works.

I also now have an even bigger problem. After exiting out of the live USB and trying to reboot into MX-19, the computer hangs with a black screen that only says GRUB with a flashing cursor. So it also appears that the live USB messed up my system.

Rebooting back into the Live USB of MX-21 will simply erase everything I've done, assuming I ever get the printer to work. As for methods, so far, the only two methods I've tried are the script for Brother that is referenced in the MX Wiki and the method you have outlined. Neither have worked for me thus far and have only succeeded in messing up my system. I don't think I had quite this much trouble when I installed MX-19 and I'm pretty sure I didn't have this much trouble when I tried Manjaro. I would prefer to use MX, but I really wanted to see if everything worked before installing it to my hard drive. That does not seem possible.

Those are selection items when downloaded brother scripts get started - not script options.
Whatever script you may have run ..
And it doesn't really matter what you choose here, b/c the main point is
about the driver get installed.
Even if you choose a non-working protocol or ip-address.
Just ignore this and open the GUI to setup the "new" Printer.
And best as mentioned start first with the known IP address of the
printer and select the printer drive from the list to check the printer works.
You can add further "Printers" or change the printer network-protocol
instead of direct IP-address.
To check printer IP-address open in the browser,
otherwise you go in circles, when reusing an "old" one "found in MX-19" settings somewhere.
