MX updater configuration.  [Solved]

#1 Post by Qiset »

I've removed firefox from my computer after I installed the new
os. mxlinux 21.2. Today, the updater showed the need to update
firefox. How can I remove firefox from the updater?

Code: Select all

sudo apt-mark hold firefox
... But.. how did you remove it? Normally it shouldn't ask/force you to upgrade a non-existing thing..

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge firefox -y
Then (maybe after a reboot) re-run the updater...

if firefox was removed, it should not be showing as an update. please provide a snippet of the apt-history (right-click the updater, and select History) from the day you removed firefox, showing the removal and things either side of the removal from the same day.

I removed firefox using the mx-installer. I checked the history for the updater and it only goes back to my last reboot. That was after I removed firefox.

Here's what it has:

2022-10-02 11:54:42 upgrade firefox amd64 104.0.2~mozillabinaries-1mx21+1 105.0.1~mozillabinaries-1mx21+1

While I appreciate all the advise for the particular issue. What I asked was if there is a way to exclude it (or any other program)
from the updater. That would give me a way to handle any such problem in the future.

Huckleberry Finn gave that in post 2.

but the apt-history says firefox 104 was installed at the time of the upgrade request.

firefox is special as some libreoffice-packages do have
a dependencey on firefox ( or alternative like firefox-esr)
Make sure you kept libreoffice-firefox-compat installed,
as libreoffice depends on firefox ( or on alternative).
The dummy helper package libreoffice-firefox-compat
provide a "virtual" firefox package to avoid the issue and by this
it makes sure you can remove the real firefox, and libreoffice
dependency would still be satisfied.
So incase you also removed libreoffice-firefox-compat,
you may get in the loop of getting firefox or firefox-esr
reinstalled as soon as you uninstall the other, as long
as you have libreoffice installed.

The libreoffice connection makes sense. I still would like to know if there is a way to configure the updater. I'm beginning to think one can't.

The apt-mark command (above) will be considered by the updater (as it uses apt) (also when manually updating using apt/apt-get in a terminal). There's no gui way in the updater to check/uncheck etc.

You can also pin (lock) packages in Synaptic also but that one will be considered by Synaptic, not the updater.

mx-updater (aka apt-notifier) as just a wrapper tool around apt/apt-get, similar to MX-Package Installer or Synaptic.
When installing packages it's all about dependencies. A package often depends on quite a number of other packages.
Now, you can make one dependent package say "un-installable" either by putting it on "hold" (apt-mark hold...) to always been kept back as a dependent package or give it a very lower PIN-Priority (something like Pacakge-INstallation Priority). In both cases apt and co, would also reject install the requiring package with an Error message like "Error. You have kept back packages.)

Also apt-mark would not stop the updater to list the package as upgradable if installed.
OTOH, you can also make it neither upgradable nor even installable. E.g. if you give firefox a PIN-Priority of "-1".
You wont be even allowed to install it manually.
So, in this case of libreoffice if you try to install the default set of libreoffice-packages, you would probably get the alternatives liveoffice is dependent on.
Which are either of those: firefox, firefox-esr, chromium, epiphany-browser and konqueror.
Now you could make all of those un-installable and by this would get an Error from apt as none dependent package alternatives are available.

This was the reason to have a special MX provided meta-package libreoffice-firefox-compat, which would now allow libreoffice to get (re-)installed even if any of those original dependent browser-packages are kept back.
In generaly try to avoid holding back packages, as this may give some unclear results later, due to "broken"/kept back packages dependencies.
