No power saving for display [Solved]
No power saving for display
As I've detailed in other threads, xscreensaver was not suspending or shutting off the display at the specified time after playing a youtube video, and sometimes randomly without youtube involvement.
I uninstalled it and turned on display management in power manager, but now that's not even blanking the screen either after restarting X or rebooting the system. These are my settings:
Power Manager > Display tab:
Display power management: enabled
Blank after 1 minute
Put to sleep after 2 minutes
Switch off after 60 minutes
Brightness reduction is set to 80% on inactivity, and reduce after says "Never," but those options are both grayed out and can't be adjusted. I don't think it's enabled (guessing it's for laptops?).
Power Manager > Security tab:
Automatically lock the session: When screensaver is activated (which doesn't really make sense, as there is no screensaver installed), and I also tried "when screensaver is deactivated" (again, doesn't make sense). "Never" isn't want I want so those are apparently the only two other choices
Delay locking after screensaver (again, no screensaver, so confusing) for: 1 seconds
Lock screen when system is going to sleep is checked, but I don't put the system to sleep as it works part time as a server, but I just selected that in case it really means when the display is going to sleep
Session and Startup applet:
Screen Locker is selected in Application Autostart tab, and "Lock screen before sleep" checkbox is selected on the General tab. Not sure why all this stuff has to be selected in like 12 different places - wouldn't it be better to have it centralized in just one location? - but as far as I know the configuration is correct. But no power management.
Can anyone help me figure this out? I'm at my wits end just trying to get a simple screen suspend and locked screen for security. I never had these problems in 18 or 19 and it doesn't seem like it should be this difficult. Could something be wrong with my video driver setup? (Nvidia 390xx legacy version - I looked through the app, but nothing jumped out at me as related or misconfigured).

Re: No power saving for display
Sometimes this may be overlooked by users: When it's a laptop there are 2 sub-tabs in tabs of Power Manager: "On battery" and "Plugged in".
So, check if you did settings for both.
Re: No power saving for display
Yes, same install. Power manager was *sort of working,* but 1) after the screen blanked, the login screen would come on like a second or two later. Then it just stayed that way until it went to sleep. It was going to sleep/suspend, though, so I just dealt with that. 2) this morning when I took it out of sleep, it wouldn't wake up, all I got was the mouse trailing around the blank screen with a strange lag. I tried restarting X with ctrl+alt+del and it wouldn't restart, so I had to reboot. Now it hasn't worked since.Stuart_M wrote: Sun Sep 04, 2022 1:38 pm Please post your Quick System Information (QSI) so we can get an idea of what you system looks like.

That's a known issue:linuxuzer wrote: Sun Sep 04, 2022 3:42 pm... when I took it out of sleep, it wouldn't wake up, all I got was the mouse trailing around the blank screen with a strange lag. I tried restarting X with ctrl+alt+del and it wouldn't restart, so I had to reboot...
The xfce4-screensaver was causing that on MX19 and we (especially me) suggested the MX Team to not include that in MX21.
But, other than that, there's a known issue (in general , not MX-specific) with some older Nvidia cards and some Intel cards and the Linux kernel. For example on this HP (mine) (no matter what distro and what DE) only 4.9 and 4.19 (kernels) are ok in that manner with Nvidia.
Shortly: You can try different kernels (the newest ones like 5.19 or 5.18 and/or 4.19 to see what happens.
(In fact 5.18 has reached EOL but it'll be simple to install with 2 clicks from Popular Apps tab in MXPI. (5.19 is in other tabs: Test and Backports) )
Re: No power saving for display
Ok, thanks a lot. The interesting thing is I wasn't getting any of these issues with 19, they only started when I upgraded to 21. So maybe it is an issue with the 5.x kernel, because as far as I remember I still had a 4 kernel with 19. I'm going to downgrade that to a 4.x and my guess based on what you said is that it will fix the issue. I'll mark it solved if it works, or just post again if it doesn't. Thanks again.Huckleberry Finn wrote: Sun Sep 04, 2022 5:47 pmThat's a known issue:linuxuzer wrote: Sun Sep 04, 2022 3:42 pm... when I took it out of sleep, it wouldn't wake up, all I got was the mouse trailing around the blank screen with a strange lag. Part of my problem, just to add, is that MX has been so trouble-free that I generally don't keep up on issues like this with nvidia and the kernel. It "just works," so I just go about my merry way and am oblivious until something breaks, lol

Re: No power saving for display
In case you install: You'll find it under "Advanced Options" in Grub to boot with. Then in case it's ok, you can make it the default with "MX Boot Options" - "Boot to" menu.
Just one more note: There's also such a known issue in general (maybe Xfce-specific):
When you first suspend then close the lid.. then open the lid.. everything's fine..
But when you directly close the lid (yes it suspends...) then open the lid : Wakes up with a blank screen (Grrrr)

Re: No power saving for display
I'm just noticing there are no 4.x kernels in synaptic. I seem to remember there used to be dozens of both 4 and 5 - is there a repo I have to add now for old kernels?
In case upgrading to 5.13 works - i'll try that first - what's the difference between mx-amd64 and mx2-amd64?
