screensaver settings

#1 Post by fishface »

MX-21.2 ahs x64 Wildflower Xfce 4.16.0

Installed yesterday and all updated.

I've used MX Linux KDE for many years, so use to using MX Linux - but I'm struggling to find the settings for setting the time period for when the screensaver kicks-in, when I enter "screensaver" in the Whisker search no results direct me to the settings, I've looked under Power Options, Display etc.

With MX Linux 19.4 KDE, I had the the screenlock after 20mins of inactivity, so would like to to the same with Xfce.

I feel slightly stupid even asking this question,I thought it would be really simple thing to do, I've been using MX Linux for awhile...since 2018.

"Power Manager" ?

(Yes, it sounds you looked at the correct place. No screensaver on MX21, just play with those settings. Also note that there are 2 sub-tabs: When on Battery (and) When Plugged in, so, don't forget to do it for both)

Right-click on desktop > Applications > Settings > Screensaver ?

Although I forget what MX installs by default, as there are so many issues with screen power management in MX, it seems, and I've installed and reinstalled screensavers so many times trying to find one that works. So maybe right-click > Applications > Settings > Settings manager app has the xfce4 screensaver settings ?

Oh - you guys couldn't get it to work right, either, glad to know it's not just me :P

BTW - not to hijack the thread - but could you tell me the quick and easy answer of how to get light-locker to work? It doesn't come on for me even though it's in the autostart applications. TIA, as I'm guessing if the OP uses the power manager method he will run into the same problem...

You need to check "Lock Screen Before Sleep" either in "Session and Startup" - "General" tab, or in Power Manager - "Security" tab.

(Normally it's already checked by default).

Ok, found it under where Huckleberry Finn mentioned above, thanks BTW.

I still cannot find any find a time setting for when the screensaver kicks-in, I can see time settings for turning display off, a delay time for that, but nothing specifically for the screensaver, is it a separate app? I guess using "Go Blank after xxx mins" will work for now.

At least I have something to lock the screen and hopefully it works as expected, in years past I have issues with it working with Xfce, that was one of the reason I switched to KDE. MX has been my daily driver at work and home since 2018, and for corporate use, it's policy to have a password protected screensaver or screen lock after 10mins of no activity.

You're welcome. Though there's no screensaver on MX21 ootb (cause the xfce4-screensaver caused many troubles on MX19) this simply does it as you say: Just lock the screen after a period of inactivity (or lock & suspend etc).

In the meantime, that doesn't mean you can't install any. i.e. Xscreensaver is ok though it looks dated :)

You can mark the thread clicking the check-mark icon on the solution post.

That's what I thought - it's set that way, but it's not coming on. And sometimes when the screen wakes up from suspend set by power manager, both screens will be the same instead of two separate desktops, and I have to go into display to reset them. I'll start a new thread, as something is clearly wrong with my setup to be having all these display problems. But it's from a fresh install, so i don't really know what's going on. Feel free to delete this message if you are able to or have an admin delete it so as not clutter up this guy's thread, thanks.

I have noticed a side issue, might be a bug. Screen lock is working, but noticed that when I wake the screen after a period, the password dialog appears, enter password, all works as expected, but several times the wifi is disconnected and I have to manually re-connect.
