No sound on Line Out - MX 21.1 KDE

#1 Post by DMLinux »

I do not have any sound from the Line Out port on the back of the PC. Headphones plugged into the port on the front work, and my Topping D-30 & A-30 work from the optical port. When I boot into Windows 10, the Line Out works OK. I am using the un-amplified speaker that are built into my Asus VA-229 monitor. I will note that the headphones connected to the front port have a lower volume with MX that they do with Windows. I will also note that MX Quick System Info IDs the audio as "Intel 200 Series PCH HD Audio". Windows Device Manager (image below) shows "Realtek Digital", "Realtek ALC1220A", "RealtekAudio" and "Intel Dispay Adio", and Asus calls it "SupremeFX S1220A". It is a high-resolution 5.1 channel surround sound with an SPDIF optical output on the back and a hi-res output for the headphone port. The headphones are MassDrop-Sennheiser HD-6XX 300-ohm impedance. The VA-229 monitor is connected with HDMI, but the built-in speakers use a standard 1/8 inch stereo cable.

I have all of the ALSAMixer controls raised, except for mic and capture which are a zero. I have Analog Stereo selected for the PulseAudio output. PulseAudio does show the change to headphones when I connect them.

I will greatly appreciate any help. Thank you in advance!

You can install 5.17 kernel from "Popular Apps" tab in "MX Package Installer" with 2 clicks.

... Even 5.18 from "Debian Backports" tab:

Type 5.18 in the search bar, select both:

linux-headers-5.18.... ......
linux-image-5.18... ......

click install.

I installed kernel 5.17 from the Popular Apps repository. That did not fix the problem. Still no sound on Line Out (green port on the back of the PC) to my monitor's built-in speakers.

To aide in troubleshooting, I booted to Live USBs of three other distros, and found the same problem. I then plugged in an old set of amplified speakers that I no longer use in place of the monitor speakers and have working sound. For some reason the output of that port is lower volume with Linux than with Windows (the monitor's speakers only require 1.5 watts). The monitor's built-in speakers work OK for notification sounds and other stuff with Windows, but there is no volume Linux. I have no need for the high-volume from those old speakers, but I do need the same level from the monitor built-in speakers that I have with Windows.

Is there a possibility that Linux is driving that port at a power level that would be lower than Windows drives it? Or that the wrong driver is loaded. The driver in use is snd_hda_intel as shown in QSI, but as I mentioned in my first post on this topic, the sound chip may be a "Realtek ALC1220A" instead of an Intel 200 chip. QSI IDs it as "Intel 200 Series PCH HD Audio" instead of Realtek. Note that the Asus ROG Strix motherboard is able to provide 8-channel surround sound via 5 ports on the back, and high definition headphone audio to the front port.

The driver etc. are ok (correct).

Press F6 and select 0 HDA Intel .. then press F5 "All" ..

Then (as you might already know) you can unmute (also mute) items with the M key from keyboard (those showing MM are muted btw)..
  • Any item may be even at max. value and may still be muted.
  • Even when everything looks "not muted", if you see "Auto-Mute Mode" just disable it. By default it shows "enabled", just use the up/down arrow keys and turn it to disabled.
  • If you haven't already done: Disable "Fast Startup" in Windows. (As it keeps devices engaged for it's not a real shutdown).

If still not:

Code: Select all

echo 'blacklist snd_hda_codec_realtek' | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
Reboot.

In case it doesn't work or causes any issues you can remove it:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf

I have NOT YET done anything you have suggested in this post because I am now wondering if I am troubleshooting the wrong thing and/or describing the problem wrong. I THINK maybe the problem is that Linux does not see the monitor' non-powered speakers as an "output device". I checked the Asus VA229HR https://www.asus.com/us/Displays-Deskto ... e/VA229HR/ web page for drivers after remembering that Win10 lists it by name on the volume control and in Device Manager. Asus does not supply *ANY* drivers for the monitor. PulseAudio sees the Line Out as "Connected" but (I am guessing here) does not see the actual device that is connected. If I disconnect the monitor's speakers and plug in a set of powered speakers, I have good sound without making and changes to AlsaMixer or the PulseAudio Volume Control app. If I disconnect the powered speakers and reconnect the monitor speakers, I hear nothing. The monitor speakers work correctly in Windows 10. If I connect headphones to the front port on the PC, they work correctly. The digital SPDIF Optical port on the back also works correctly. What I need to fix is having no sound through the monitor's built in speakers. The first image below shows what Win10 sees and the second image shows what MX 21 sees. MX appears to know that SOMETHIING is plugged in, but is not making the plugged in speakers work when the monitor's non-powered built in speakers are what is plugged in. Also, when using headphones, I have to set the taskbar volume control at 100% to get the same volume level that I get with about 70% in Windows.

Have you looked at the settings in 'PulseAudio Volume Control'?

Edit
Checking email and when I came back I hit the Submit button.
Did you check the Configuration tab and the Playback tab?

Yes. I have tried all of the Configuration tab options for Analog output. Most are tagged as "(unavailable)".

You show your 'Monitor-1: HDMI-2 res: 1920x1080 hz: 60 dpi: 102 size: 476x268mm (18.7x10.6").

You are dual booting with Windows. You show "ASUS VA229(Intel(R) Display Audio). I don't know if that is your analog-stereo connection or if Windows is using the sound thru HDMI, not analog-stereo?
The only way that I can think is to boot into Windows and while playing some sound is to disconnect your analog connection. If sound still plays then the sound is coming thru your HDMI connection.

By what you posted you have:

Code: Select all

output:hdmi-stereo-extra1: Digital Stereo (HDMI 2) Output (sinks: 1, sources: 0, priority: 5700, available: yes)
plus

Code: Select all

hdmi-output-1: HDMI / DisplayPort 2 (type: HDMI, priority: 5800, latency offset: 0 usec, available)
                        Properties:
                                device.icon_name = "video-display"
                                device.product.name = "ASUS VA229"
                        Part of profile(s): output:hdmi-stereo-extra1, output:hdmi-stereo-extra1+input:analog-stereo
You can change Configuration tab options, enable HDMI instead of analog to test on MX.
