gdebi

#1 Post by old_guy »

I know that we are discouraged from installing from "outside", but I saw where Adrian made a comment about rustdesk and so I downloaded the deb file to take a look at it.
I right clicked on the file in thunar and it timed for awhile and did nothing. I could open gdebi-gtk and then choose the file and it ran, but right clicking on the file did not work. I found that
gdebi 0.9.5.7+nmu5+1mx21 works OK, but the upgrade to 0.9.5.7+nmu5+2mx21 gives the right click failure.

gdebi appears to be flakey and inconsistent ( even in MX19). Instead of using that right click option in Thunar/Dolphin, use the right click option provided by the MX Devs themselves, called "Install Deb file".
Desktop: Intel i5-4460, 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics
Clevo N130WU-based Ultrabook: Intel i7-8550U (Kaby Lake R), 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics (UEFI)
ASUS X42D laptop: AMD Phenom II, 6GB RAM, Mobility Radeon HD 5400

In Dolphin, it's under "Actions/Install deb file(s)". One big advantage over gdebi is that it can install multiple deb file in one swoop, which is great if they are interdependent. Like I just backported projectM, and need to install both the new projectM and the projectm-data debs at one time. The Thunar action is the same.
