Since I am satisfied, I hardly change anything, the last adjustment was for dual monitor operation and that was it.

Icons in the root menu? That's how different approaches are, I find it easier to quickly identify the menu items with icons+text in the root menu. But I also have over -6 diopters, massive astigmatism (without glasses, circles are ellipses for me, if they are close enough that I can see them at all without glasses). And one eye is almost only good for recognising differences in brightness.
The reason I use fbmenugen is not only because of the icons, but also because I generally have more configuration options regarding the appearance and structure of my menus.

Just like @wdscharff and @Outlander, I prefer fbmenugen too, because of its speed and configurability (is that a word?). Besides that , I rather like the 'text-only' appearance of the FB rootMenu anyway.
If you really want crispy icons displayed in your main menu, you could consider using jgmenu. Configuring that beast is a steep learning process tho'.

From my archive: EOS 20D with LEICA APO-Macro-Elmarit-R 2.8/100mm.
I only use my own images, some of which I have made available to the MX community.
This one too :-)

Checking out the styles that comes with antiX's Fluxbox desktop. This one pairs well with my aeroplane. (grabbed the styles from antiX's GitHub page)

This is my Fluxbox . There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My Fluxbox is my best friend. It is my life.
I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Fluxbox is useless. Without my Fluxbox, I am useless.
