So earlier this year I had to ditch MX linux KDE on my old lappy due to performance issues, its an ol gal with almost 10 year old hardware.
I replaced it with MX XFCE and while a far better experience I never intended to be my main distro for this machine.
I knew Ubuntu 22.04 was around the corner, and Ubuntu MATE seemed like a good fit.
If KDE is clunking then Gnome would be the same, I mean I did briefly try the latest LMDE on my old lappy but it ran very slow and hot.
So I elected on Ubuntu MATE to give a spin.
Now performance wise they are identical, I see no real difference TBH which means Ubuntu mate is solid as usual.
However, the annoyance comes from firefox now being a snap in ubuntu, I find it very slow to load.
Now I have no horse in the pro or anti snap race but when my browser take an eternity to load.... no just no.
I am an avid firefox user so to have it load at a snails pace irks me, yes I can install it via other means but I am not too crazy about hoop jumping for something so simple.
Firefox going snap only in ubuntu was a mistake, and I hope the end users give them hell.
MX linux vs Ubuntu Mate 22.04 on my old laptop: why MX will stay
Re: MX linux vs Ubuntu Mate 22.04 on my old laptop: why MX will stay
wait...what?
There is no Repo or PPA with Firefox Deb Packages for Ubuntu..? That reeks of insanity..
I used to use this on oldstable versions of Debian, it worked great: https://sourceforge.net/p/ubuntuzilla/wiki/Main_Page/

If you like the Mate desktop, you can install it on MX Xfce by selecting "task-mate" in synaptic. Or, you can paste and run this command in terminal:
Code: Select all
sudo apt install mate-core mate-desktop-environment mate-desktop-environment-extras mate-applet-appmenu mate-applet-brisk-menu mate-applets mate-backgrounds mate-calc mate-dock-applet mate-hud mate-indicator-applet mate-media mate-menu mate-multiload-ng-applet mate-notification-daemon mate-polkit-bin mate-power-manager mate-sensors-applet mate-sensors-applet-nvidia mate-system-monitor mate-tweak mate-utils mate-window-buttons-applet mate-window-menu-applet mate-window-title-applet materia-gtk-theme mozo pluma eom engrampa atril caja-actions caja-admin caja-gtkhash caja-image-converter caja-open-terminal caja-rename caja-seahorse caja-sendto caja-share caja-wallpaper caja-xattr-tags python3-caja gir1.2-caja-2.0 caja-mediainfo ffmpegthumbnailer

Forgot about that option.

Re: MX linux vs Ubuntu Mate 22.04 on my old laptop: why MX will stay
Yeah, I did play with MATE on MX linux, it works fine.
I just like the subtle tweaks the Ubuntu MATE team does over stock MATE, makes the system feel very professional.
The boot screen, the login, the whole nine yards.
It's something I always liked about Ubuntu MATE, it's far from your typical re spin.
It's much like MX linux in this regard, or Mint.
I am more of a linux Connoisseur, experiencing the flavors and see what suits my palate :D

Re: MX linux vs Ubuntu Mate 22.04 on my old laptop: why MX will stay
On ubuntu you could simply uninstall the snap version of firefox and replace it with the mozilla binary. It has its own update mechanism so stays up-to-date without even needing to wait for someone to package it for any particular distro.

Connoisseur eh? Xerolinux will install kvm/qemu as an option similar to MX-Tweak's codec after-boot installer. I have to try it out even if it's arch based. My laptop will stay MX because it works so well with my hardware and I have zero issues. My desktop I'm not done installing so haven't yet decided on what it will be running FT.
