Latest Liquorix Kernel will not install any Nvidia driver (AV Linux) (Resolved)

#1 Post by pksings2021 »

Failing to configure DKMS as part of the install. Will not run post install either. Machine failed over to nouveau, which is less than acceptable. Error indicates the kernel does not support it. (will add if asked) I suspect I am not the only one with this issue and it is probably already being worked on.

Tried MX-Nvidia Installer and manual apt-get installs and all fail to configure Nvidia-DKMS integration.
Tried 390, 360 and 340. Multiple times, purging in-between and rebooting. Tried Systemd and non-systemd. No difference. Have not tried removing new kernal. That will be next I guess. Hate to do it since it probably is a bug-fix update.

Thanks, Paul

Re: Latest Liquorix Kernel will not install any Nvidia driver (AV Linux)

#2 Post by AVLinux »

Hi,

I may be wrong but I think there aren't 5.16 nVidia drivers ported from upstream Debian into the MX Repos yet but I'm sure they are on their way soon.

The Liquorix 5.16 was requested by me for inclusion into Stable because it reportedly improves Audio latency with USB Audio interfaces. Other than that (which remains to be seen in real world situations) it really shouldn't provide any meaningful or noticeable benefits over Liquorix 5.15 at least as far as AV Linux is concerned..

the 5.10 package in the ahs repo will build on 5.16 kernels. we do have legacy drivers in there as well, but YMMV.

Re: Latest Liquorix Kernel will not install any Nvidia driver (AV Linux)

#5 Post by pksings2021 »

Thank you for your assistance. Very much appreciated. The only reference to 5.10 I can find related to Nvidia is the installed Nvidia-detect program, which I have tried a number of times, it recommends version 3.90 of Nvidia, which will not configure DKMS. Perhaps I need assistance figuring out why the DKMS configuration process is failing, I believe it's looking for something that isn't here but have no idea how to find out what that might be.

its very possible that the 390 drivers will not compile on the 5.16 kernel. we ran into similar with the default debian 460 drivers. the suggestion then would be to drop back to the 5.10 kernel.

support for fermi based nvidia cards was dropped by nvidia as of the 396 drivers, so 390 is as far as you can go with your card.

just checked, and the 390 drivers being offered are from the debian repo. and those will not build on anything beyond a 5.10 kernel.

@dolphin_oracle

The OP is using AV Linux... Kernel 5.10 won't be very good candidate for Audio work

@pksings2021

Did you have your nVidia drivers working on the previous default AV Linux Liquorix 5.15 Kernel?

Also... if you don't want to be constantly asked to update the Kernel you can put your existing Kernel on hold in the AVL-MXE Assistant--> 'Package Settings'

I just sent up updated 390xx legacy Nvidia drivers, backported from Sid, which purport to have patches to allow builds on even 5.17 kernels. 390.147-3, from Sid.
But I think the 390.147-1 in bullseye-backports will build, since Debian now has 5.16 kernel backports in there. Does'nt ddm-mx have a "-b" switch to install from backports?

I have limits on how much time I can spend building packages, especially since we now support armhf, and I have to use QEMU emulation to build those, which makes builds take ten times longer.

Code: Select all

ddm-mx -i nvidia -b
Yea you can use the above and it will offer to check backports instead of test.
