Need wifi hdwe recommendation for MX19 that works  [Solved]

#1 Post by Caesar2 »

Need wifi hdwe recommendation for MX19 that works because I need to tether an iphone 10 to my MX19 installation.

I could also use help finding the instructions for connecting MX19 to the iPhone 10 (XS Max). The phone is jail broken. T-Mobile is the phone company and 40 gigs of hotspot data is included in the plan.

Code: Select all

inxi
CPU: 6-Core AMD Ryzen 5 1600 (-MT MCP-) speed/min/max: 1789/1550/3200 MHz
Kernel: 5.8.0-3-amd64 x86_64 Up: 2d 1h 23m Mem: 2787.0/16005.5 MiB (17.4%)
Storage: 3.64 TiB (61.6% used) Procs: 275 Shell: Bash inxi: 3.3.06
The question has nothing to do with downloading the camera pictures from the camera. I want to be able to connect as a hot spot. Just to clarify.

OK, so the wi-fi hardware doesn't even show up in QSI.

If you have another OS on the machine where it does work, can you get its chipset information, or is it listed on a sticker on the machine's bottom?

Could you try a live USB of MX 21 to see if it works there? We have similar newer kernels and firmware available in AHS for MX 19--up to 5.16, soon to be 5.17. That's where most wifi drivers live.

His board doesn't have on-board wifi, he's just looking for recommendations.

I'm looking into replacing my Netgear Nighthawk (USB wifi dongle) due to divers are hard to come by for the rtl8814 chipsets. I've narrowed down my search to these PCIe cards that should work in Linux.

If you can't find anything by searching these forums, use Google, MX is Debian based so the same instructions should work.

I think the gold standard is an Intel based PCI wifi chipset, but you may have to update the kernel and firmware-iwlwifi for more recent cards.

I don't think that Intel makes USB wifi adapter chips, though.

~$100 QNAP QXP-W6-AX200 Intel Wifi6 ax200 pcie wireless card with official support for linux (&windows). On ebay and the qnap store.
Tethered to your phone? An iphone forum is your best bet. They have wifi6e now too but I doubt you will even notice a difference in speeds. That last one above, of the 4, is the only one that mentions linux support. Qnap has a toll free support number and they do answer it.
I used to use my android phone's ac wifi unlimited att data plan to tether to my windows7 tablet which was hdmi'd to my TV when spectrum still allowed you to watch tv through your browser. It was practically flawless.

That mobo has 1 E Key M.2 support for wireless, so a $30 Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211NGW which has linux support should be pretty good, or as stevo mentioned any intel based unit, and lots of them available for that M.2 !

I just noticed that support for the ax201 intel wifi chipset is something that may have to be compiled in order to get it to work at all on linux. Meaning good luck.
I installed the AVL-MXE AHS iso to a minipc with an intel ax201 wifi/bt card and it saw the wifi but no connections. BT was greyed out. The minisform site has great support but no linux drivers. Their actual win10 drivers will supposedly update it to 6e wifi (amd rz-608) speeds but I don't intend on running windows.

I put regular MX21 AHS to the same zen9 cpu and BT works now. I can finally use my keychron keyboard wirelessly! Wifi is completely mia though. In any case I'd be very careful with which one you choose so as not to waste your time.
Intel says just dump the files in the driver folder and see what happens with the ax201's. Did not work at all.
It's amazing how many devices are sold that lack proper driver support. I bought a BT 5.2 dongle and it wouldn't connect to anything, even in windows. I bought a bt mouse recently I had to toss because it wouldn't connect either.
I'll get it to work eventually if the 4900H ever gets support I'm sure.
