Encrypting MX Linux installation?
Encrypting MX Linux installation?
I have 120GB SSD on my laptop on which i want to install mx linux and encrypt the installation. I see there are two methods to do that: auto install using entire disk and encrypt the installation, and create two partitions - one boot which is not encrypted, and one root which is encrypted. What are the advantages and disadvantages of these two methods?
Re: Encrypting MX Linux installation?
if you use the option "entire disk" only 2 partitions will be created: root and swap (home will be in root).
The advantage of that would be that you have to type the encryption password only once on boot up, with 2 partitions you would have to type it twice.
The disadvantage of having home together with root in 1 partition is, that if you reinstall MX or install a new version, all your settings will be lost.

Re: Encrypting MX Linux installation?
You can use the slider to decide how much to allocate to root and how much for home. By default the slider is all the way at 100% meaning only 2 partitions (swap and root) are created. For SSDs, be sure to update the installer first, to take advantage of automatic SSD optimisations.
Re: Encrypting MX Linux installation?
That's not so because I have my installation encrypted with root and separate home partitions and I only have to type my password once by setting it to auto log in.S.t.e.P. wrote: Sat Apr 02, 2022 4:46 pm if you use the option "entire disk" only 2 partitions will be created: root and swap (home will be in root).

@mauser: you should quote correctly. The way you quoted my answer makes my whole answer look wrong, which it isn't.
I wrote what I remembered, two years ago I think I had to type the password twice for each partition.
