Wired connection fails to set ip configuration, only restart fixes it.

#1 Post by LearningMX »

When I switch from WiFi to the Ethernet Wired Connection for the first time after a reboot, the Wired Interface immediately configures and I'm good to go. When I disconnect the wire and use WiFi some more and then later reconnect the wire, the ip configuration takes a long time and eventually fails. I tried different port on the switch, power cycling the switch, unplugging and replugging the cable etc, nothing works; except rebooting the system, then it work without a problem, but only for the first time the wire is connected, then it stops working again.

Any ideas on how to trouble shoot this further ? It's on KDE and 'allow all users' is checked for the wired connection:

Though this may not solve this issue, you can install the 5.16 kernel from Popular Apps tab in MX Package Installer from Menu, with 2 clicks.

And, is it the same if you try on live session with any version of MX (official iso rather than your snapshot) ?

Your QSI Network section is very unusual. Notice all of the entries for the Ethernet port IF-ID-1 through IF-ID-30...

The first chunk IF-ID-1 through ID-ID-4 come up...with real MAC addresses

Then there is the weird message for IF-ID-5 that shows it is looking for a docker connection and fails...

Then the last chunk IF-ID-6 through IF-ID-30 come up but are all virtual Ethernet connections.

Looks like the Ethernet connection is trying over and over to get an IP address via DHCP from the router...This could account for the delay in getting connected.

Try: logging into the router and go to the section on DHCP...and assign/reserve a permanent IP Address to the MAC address for your Ethernet port (that should show in the list of devices that are connected)

I mentioned this before in a previous post of yours.

Your BIOS -> LENOVO v: GQCN26WW(V1.12) date: 08/23/2021

Latest BIOS -> GQCN30WW_HFCN25WW date: 24 Jan 2022
Webrelease
1. Implement SPD table for Samsung 8G on-board RAM.
2. Add the panel brightness nits setting about BOE and HKC.
3. Add ELAN I2C touchpad support.
4. Add the SAR table ID about Realtek WLAN

There seems to be something updated on your Realtek WLAN for radiated power from antennas. Can you update and see if the BIOS update makes a difference? With you switching between your ethernet and WiFi, not sure if the latest BIOS will help. If you're stuck for something to try.

Did the BIOS update and assigned a permanent ipv4 address, first test looks promising, if it fails again I'll try the kernel update. The many fake interfaces might be from docker containers?

Thank you all !!

Ha,ha...that's a lot of docker containers! (Especially if they are all requesting IP addresses simultaneously...and maybe you've got some old and tired router...)

So in the middle of using the wired connection, it simply deactivated. I tried to install the 5.16 Kernel from Popular Apps but I'm only being offered 5.15 and I'm already on 5.15:

When I click on the Testing Tab, it sends me right back to the Popular Tabs, somehow the Testing Tab doesn't stay active for me.

This is the new quick sys info after the bios update:

This is what trying to connect looks like:
eth0.png
I ordered new cat7 cables and will try those tomorrow, but since I'm using the same connection and cable successfully on a wifi AP it shouldn't be the link.

I tried setting the network interface to 'manual' ip configuration, it then shows the state as 'connected' but at least DNS doesn't work by either setting the local routers ip or googles dns as the DNS IP field.

Any additional ideas on how to trouble shoot this, which log files to view etc ? Would love to get a reliable ethernet connection going ...

I was just typing this: Glad to hear they worked. You can mark the thread clicking the check-mark icon on the solution post :)

This is another interesting issue: 5.15 is also not greyed out ...(Meanwhile, what a crowded sources list ... )

If you remove/disable all the docker containers, are the eth0 issues still persisting?
Mixed of desktops and laptops, I have a Gravis Ultrasound Classic card (unfortunately its ISA-slot based) ... - I must be a dino. :popcorn:
