External Camera on Linux - ask before buy

#1 Post by hkjz »

Hey,

sometimes i need an internet camera - who doesn't.
I thought to buy one external USB camera.
Is there something i suppose to know considering LinuxOS as such.
Should i be prepared for some additional troubles? Something i need to know about camera software which wont happen automatically?

Any hints for general technical predispositions?

WQHD quality seems ok to me, considering that the price for UHDs is doubled

If you buy a known brand such as Logitech, it should work fine. They always have for me.

Lesser known brands may also work, and I have one that does.

I have an older Creative webcam, which I did not think would work, and still working flawlessly on MX Linux. Agree with chrispop99, stay with known brand names.
Mixed of desktops and laptops, I have a Gravis Ultrasound Classic card (unfortunately its ISA-slot based) ... - I must be a dino.

Beware that some of the old Logitech were not compatible though.
Two that look identical come to mind. One compatible one not.
The Logitech Web Cam Pro 9000 is Linux compatible.
The look alike Logitech Quick Cam Pro 9000 is not Linux compatible.

So far I've tried 3 different Logitech and one no name USB camera, as well as the cameras built in to several different ThinkPad laptops. All have worked just fine with Linux.

It would help a lot if you could be a bit more specific about your needs.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
HP 17; ryzen 3 3200; 500 GB SSD; 12 GB ram
Idea Center 3; 12 gen i5; 256 GB ssd;

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.
