Why XP though? Why not 10?
Is there any disadvantage to using Windows as VM only?

Because XP is the last version of Windows that I bought. Vista horrified me and by the time 7 came along I was using Mepis. Windows 8 was another disaster and the direction was now clear - Microsoft would control your use of your computer.
The version of Filemaker Pro that I have won't run on Win10 and I can't justify another £165 to upgrade it.

Re: Is there any disadvantage to using Windows as VM only?
I'm running Virtualbox for many years, XP & W7.
You lose some power and sometimes your special hardware (if any) will not be available in the vbox...
So I'm urged to use the bare metal for my W7 + video-cut.
But newer hardware seems powerful enough and I changed this, too.
And - if you need some elder systems, like me - it will not run on newest hardware.
Big advantage: If you set some 'checkpoints' you will have a nearly perfect backup if you get hacked or produce some other crash.

Do not forget to block the internet for that virtual machine! Saves you from updates :)
