Re: MX-21 "ahs" (Xfce) RC3 feedback

#41 Post by MXRobo »

Used the installer to create and mount /mnt/DATA partition (as well as /mnt/Restore) and permission is denied when I try to save save a file, create a folder or mkdir yields Permission denied. I assume that I can fix with

Code: Select all

sudo chown -R yourusername: /mnt/DATA
but I am reporting this as an issue, not necessarily for a fix.
This function worked fine in MX-21 Xfce NON-AHS.

I have both MX-21-Xfce and MX-21-Xfce AHS installed on this laptop.

EDIT - Added /home users:

Pav15:/home
$ ls
lost+found rmx15 rxa15

Pav15:/boot/efi/EFI
$ ls
BOOT MX21

Seems to be a problem.
How do I differentiate between the regular MX and the AHS MX?

Again, as always, I'm a newbie and could have errored with the installer, and I did it rather quickly because I feel that I know it fairly well now - yes contradictory.

Hope it helps.

Mouse and Touchpad Keeps reverting to Mouse.
Seems to work OK, but it's just that it won't retain the Touchpad.
This happens between simply closing the Mouse and Touchpad window and reopening the window.
A logout or reboot is not required for this. This happens in both MX-21-Xfce AHS and MX-21-Xfce.

Just reporting this issue. It seems to work just fine however!
Thank you.

HDMI audio, Alsamixer S/PDIF(s) muted.
HDMI audio, Need to select sound card, then unmute S/PDIFs as they are either all, or some are muted.

No HDMI audio. Unmuting sound card(s) in Alsamixer fixes the problem.
Alsamix Selecting sound card: 0 HD-Audio Generic the first available sound card after default reveals the either one (1) or both of the S/PDIFs are muted - shown in either F3 (Playback) or F5 (All).

alsactl init, followed by sudo alsactl store do not retain the settings.

The following do not work:

Code: Select all

amixer set -c0 Master unmute
amixer set -c0 Capture unmute
amixer set IEC958 unmute
amixer set 'IEC958 Optical' 100 unmute

Code: Select all

This issue also exists in MX-21-Xfce NON-AHS, so it's probably not an MX-21-Xfce-AHS-RC issue
and it more likely to be an isolated hardware/software compatibility issue.

Thanks

@MXRobo Thanks for the reports!

Data partition: its not really a bug. if you use the installer to create a new Data partition, the file system will be created and owned by the root user. the same will be true if you use gparted or if you use the default settings for mkfs.ext4.

if you want the whole partition owned by a particular user, then the procedure you propose is correct. You could also have top level folders owned by different users for instance, with different permissions. I do this on my ext data partitions. the top level is owned by root, but I own all the subfolders that my user needs to do things. the situation is analogous to a /home partition. /home itself is usually owned by root, but the user home folders /home/$USER are owned by the $USER.

incidentally, the installers on ahs vs. non-ahs are the same. the version on the ahs iso is slightly newer but not in this regard. the linux core-utils on the back end is also identical.

@dolphin_oracle
You're more than welcome for the reports, thank you for the distro.

I'm new, so I get most of what your saying (and I will get all of it), and as a lone user, I don't really need to know the other users stuff yet, and thanks for the /home root, home folder owner info.

And it looks like you addressed my concern, but I really reported this because the permissions were fine on the NON-AHS install, same install method - I believe.

Also, is this a concern?
EDIT - Added /home users:
Pav15:/home
$ ls
lost+found rmx15 rxa15
Pav15:/boot/efi/EFI
$ ls
BOOT MX21

Thanks

I thought that my /boot/efi/EFI should show two different distros that are installed, both MX-21-Xfce and MX-21-Xfce-AHS.
EDIT-2: Shown: Two usernames, one distro indicated. Reality: Two usernames, two distros installed.

EDIT: Identical laptop with Mint and MX-21 installed, and I get:

BOOT MX21 ubuntu

indicating the two different distros.

If I'm wrong, sorry in advance.

the efi files are the same for all editions of MX, so they overwrite each other.

Seems to be a problem.
How do I differentiate between the regular MX and the AHS MX?
The installer just uses the name "MX21" for the UEFI boot option entry and the directory name on the ESP under /boot/efi/EFI, regardless whether Xfce, Xfce AHS, KDE or Fluxbox will be installed.
The same goes for the displayed entry within the GRUB menu, for all MX21 installs, where it would display "MX 21 Wildflower"
Also having more then one MX21 installed, it might be worth to consider to label the root-partition during installation accordingly, to avoid having multiple root partitions with identical names. In case of encrypted installs labeling the boot-partition would be of help also.

The current "workaround" I'm using post install to get some differentiation within the UEFI boot option listed names
and also within the GRUB menu could look like this:

After installation I do this:

Fix UEFI boot loader entries:
Post install either re-boot into the installed system or alternatively do not reboot and open Chroot-Rescue-Scan.
In either case within terminal do reinstall GRUB onto the ESP (EFI System partition) and give it another name:

* for "MX 21 Xfce"

Code: Select all

sudo grub-install --bootloader-id "MX21xfce" --force-extra-removable --recheck
* for "MX 21 AHS"

Code: Select all

sudo grub-install --bootloader-id "MX21ahs" --force-extra-removable --recheck
* for "MX 21 KDE"

Code: Select all

sudo grub-install --bootloader-id "MX21kde" --force-extra-removable --recheck
Fix GRUB menu entries entries:
* Adjust within /etc/lsb-release these two lines:
e.g for MX21 AHS

Code: Select all

PRETTY_NAME="MX 21 AHS Wildflower"
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="MX 21 AHS Wildflower"
or for MX 21 (Xfce) no-ahs:

Code: Select all

PRETTY_NAME="MX 21 Xfce Wildflower"
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="MX 21 Xfce Wildflower"
* After changes have been made re-generate GRUB menu by running this:

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
Do this for all MX-21 installes, accordingly.
