Some kind of error about a broken pipe?

#1 Post by frenchiveruti »

Hello,
I always use the green box on the bottom right and now it's giving me issues.
I don't know what's happening. Here's the error, that for some reason is in spanish instead of english:

Hi,

Yeah, I always hated Broadcom wireless in my laptop. Every kernel update they had to be recompiled and woe to you if that breaks and you don't have wired connection as a backup.

What worked for me 10 years ago was to just replace it with a different card. * Cost about $20 at the time and involved a couple screws and a push pin thingy. As FYI, make sure to be connected through a physical cable until the new card is working ;)

My Spanish is da nada, so if a new card isn't an option, maybe repost in the Spanish? (non-english?) forum so some one sees it who might be able to help.

Best,
Michael

* Just DuckDuck what's a good card for your mobo in Linux.

Oh I see, this is a laptop. So I'll just have to find a way to stop the thing from updating then. I don't think I have access to the Wifi Card.
Thanks Michael,

It's probably just a cover plate on the bottom, but you should have some access to it. See: https://www.tenforums.com/installation- ... ers-4.html

One of the manuals that came with the laptop should show you how to do it, and that thread had some links to YouTube vids about changing it. (just search and you should get a bunch more results)

Best,
Michael

How the heck did the Broadcom card get involved here?

It looks like you have corrupted downloads of the updated firmware packages to me. But if you don't want your output to be in Spanish, that's another issue you should fix first. If it just happened, perhaps your system has deeper problems.

My lack of understanding Spanish... (and that was the first thing that was almost always broke after firmware updates when I had one on a laptop)

Should they change repo and try again? Or rollback* and try again?

Sorry about the Broadcom red herring...

Best,
Michael

It looks like you have corrupted downloads of the updated firmware packages to me. But if you don't want your output to be in Spanish, that's another issue you should fix first. If it just happened, perhaps your system has deeper problems.
My... OS is in spanish, I understand spanish, I don't understand the error.
I never used anything outside the package manager except the workaround to fix the stupid broadcom drivers for wifi. As stated in my signature.

Re: Some kind of error about a broken pipe?

Those firmware updates have been in MX 19 main for a while, so if there are any problems with them, I think we would have quite a flood of complaints about them.

Translated:

Code: Select all

dpkg: error processing file /tmp/apt-dpkg-install-b3QFkz/00-firmware-ipw2x00_20210818-1~mx19+1_all.deb (--unpack):
trying to overwrite `/lib/firmware/ipw2100-1.3-i.fw ', which is also in the linux-firmware 1.190-1mx19 + 1 package
Ah, you're trying to update what originally was a rather old version of MX 19, which had a monolithic huge firmware package called "linux-firmware" we ported over from Ubuntu, since Debian at the time hadn't updated firmware for almost a year. Just uninstall the obsolete "linux-firmware" package on the command line, in MX Package Installer, or using Synaptic, then the backported Debian firmware packages will have a clear path to install.

Thank you so much, I'll try that and see if it works.
