Re: MX-21 KDE/plasma RC1 feedback

The RC1 looks pretty good. It boots faster than MX19.4 on my Laptop.

The Nvidia Drivers where not working for me on MX19.4. They resulted in a black screen with blinking cursor. On MX21-RC1 there where no problems. That's very nice.

Some minor issues I had are:
  • the print key is not working (for taking screenshots), tried different keyboard settings. The key is not even recognized. On MX19.4 all is fine.
  • Wifi is not reconnecting automatcally. I have to enter the wifi password every time I log in. In Network Setting it is set to automatic connection and store password, tried encripted and unencripted
  • the "Emoji Selector" found in the Utilities has no contens at all
  • the Wine (staging) package seams not fully working in the way that if choosing "Open with" on a specific file type the program opens but does not load the file I wanted to open.
I also tried to install the original wine-stable package like described on winehq.org and had no problem with this. Is something missing in the package? The same is on MX19.4
  • I use Evolution as Email Program. One issue I had in the beginning was that Unicode chars where not displayed in the Email Subject, only a broken char was shown. I finally found that I had to install the "fonts-noto-color-emoji" package. Can this be included in the installation package? I found much people had an issue with this.

We don't package Evolution, its coming from Debian, they don't have fonts-noto-color-emoji package listed as a dependency, recommend, or suggest.
I don't think we'll start packaging Evolution either, but maybe Debian will update their stuff, not sure if someone reported this issue to them or not...

This was reported by multiple users in the Beta. Any reason it's not been addressed with the RC?

Maybe it hasn’t been addressed yet since only so many things can get fixed in one month across all MX versions?

Maybe it’s a KDE issue, not an MX issue?

Any reason no one has identified the exact cause and let us know?

A weird one. The first time I ran KDE-RC1, the panels didn't appear on screen, after I re-used my /home/user setup, and I could get no response onscreen from keyboard or mouse. Thinking that it might be a problem with my I went to root by pressing CTRL-ALT-F3 (yes that did work, as did CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE etc.,), logging in as root and running startx. The same thing happened!! No panels, no mouse menus and no onscreen reaction to keys. I exited the root desktop by CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE which returned me to the text screen, and rebooted from there. On reboot, everything worked perfectly! I thought I'd make sure that it wasn't some sort of first run problem by re-installing, using the same settings etc., and this time it worked correctly. Anyway not really a fault, but would love to know why and how it happened! Totally weird!

It's a root setting that works through the KDE Systemsettings5 which, unusually, doesn't require a password. It's also part of KDE rather than MX itself, though, through other distros, I can tell you that the global network manager (as used with the XFCE version) will work instead of the KDE one, and may be more intuitive, though you won't be able to change its settings in Systemsettings5.

The only suggestion I can think of is some sort of message on screen not to forget to set it globally in the Systemsettings5.

its not default in debian. we had patched the network-manager clients under mx19, but the same patches don't work this time.

I don't know if this is specific to KDE as it's the only RC I've tried, but Skype won't install from MXPI. It seems to go through the motions but nothing gets installed. I did install Skype under the beta version so I know it was working then.

Flatpaks not working in the KDE RC1. I installed Freetube from there in the Beta version so I know it used to work on my computer.
