With the advance of digital for statements, bills, ins and other important "papers" ... I *highly* advocate for running an encrypted volume !
One or two files, sure use them as encrypted docs... however, if your like most people that have their taxes, banking info, and other important files ON their computer, do your self a favor and setup an encrypted volume and put them all there. (and yes, do not keep it open longer than getting or putting documents in it.)
And I would also advocate either running a VM for any real internet activity, and keep your secure data OUT of it, or reverse that and have a secure VM for what matters. These are all a process obviously, but if your worried about security then doing these things right can help you minimize issues.

Re: Does desktop Linux have a security problem?
Thanks for the input all. I have made some adjustments, the main one being I moved my sensitive info files from the 'open all the time' LUKS partition into a 'open only when needed' Veracrypt volume. Following the advice, I am considering further partitioning of activities between machines or virtual machines.

Re: "Good security practices are not easy. There is little that is more dangerous that using the web as a playground for games, porn, or free stuff. Be wise."
A certain young user of the system tends to run a fair few Minecraft mods from around the web. That is probably the most risky along the lines mentioned above.

Re: Does desktop Linux have a security problem?
and I would ad that if you ARE going to go to questionable places.... do it in a VM or even a live stick and NOT on your real, regular machine ;-/
