…And in debian-live-11.0.0-amd64-cinnamon + nonfree.iso and debian-live-11.0.0-amd64-xfce + nonfree.iso both sound and digital microphones work out of the box. And MXLinux's support for the latest hardware is critical to the success of the system.

MX technically supports all the same hardware and more than Debian Bullseye since we have the same kernel, drivers, and firmware, plus anything we’ve packaged ourselves.

If something from that nonfree ISO is needed we need to know what exactly makes that certain hardware work.

But whatever does make it work can be installed from the repos after the fact either way.

Apology if already addressed, it is long thread...

Shortcuts, that I put on my desktop, from the MX menu, can't be renamed. I mean, I can rename them two different ways, right click -> rename or right click -> properties and then rename the text, but there is no effect, names stay long. Such as MX Package Installer. You see part of the name, then two dots. I like to rename too long names, in this case as into: MX PI. Those long incomplete names just irritate me.

Is this a bug or by design? Is there some other way to rename too long names? If I remove .desktop part, icon is not working any more. In MX19 there was no .desktop prefix for these menu entries placed on desktop as shortcuts.

te desktop shows the name as defined by the contents of the desktop file, not the filename. you get edit the desktop file in a text editor and change the Name entry to whatever you want. if you are using a non-english locale, then change the locale entry that matches your language. its easy to see when you edit the desktop file.

That's different to MX-19. In MX-21 you would rename the desktop file, not what is displayed, when you select "Rename".
To adjust what is displayed on the desktop, right click and select "Edit launcher" and adjust the displayed "Name" field to your liking.

The operating system MX-21_beta1_x64 was installed on the HP ZBook Firefly 15.6 "G8.
After installation, there was no sound and the digital microphone did not work.
The problem with the lack of sound was solved by installing the firmware-sof-signed_1.7-1_all.deb package and after rebooting the sound started working, but the microphone did not work.
In debian-live-11.0.0-amd64-cinnamon + nonfree.iso and debian-live-11.0.0-amd64-xfce + nonfree.iso, sound and microphone work out of the box when a live session is loaded.

is the microphone external or built into the laptop? does the microphone show up as an input device in pavucontrol?

There was a setting (checkbox) to display file / folder names without shortening them. Just trying to remember, right-click on desktop, settings, Icons tab ... or so ..

Edit: MX Tweak: "Config Options" tab : "Disable shortening of long ... "

Another one, not sure if it is MX or Firefox related.

On MX19 if I right-clicked on url link in FF, new window opened and from it I could then pick "Open Link in new Tab"
Now, this window does not stay open like before, but it automatically gets triggered second option "Open Link in new Window"

Or if I want to copy/paste certain text, before I highlight it, right click on it and picked 'Copy' from new window pop up.
Now it automatically gets picked second option in pop up window: 'Select All'

To avoid this situation, you can now just hold down right mouse and pop up window will stay open, and you can click on desired menu option, but it is annoying, since you already have muscle memorized move and I always end up with new open window or 'select all' text. You can of course slowly learn 'the new way', but if you use more than one Linux flavor, and the other one is using 'the old way'...

Any chance to get right click working as in the past?

That's different to MX-19. In MX-21 you would rename the desktop file, not what is displayed, when you select "Rename".

I'm not sure how debian sets up alsa, but they also install two other packages... alsa-topology-conf and alsa-ucm-conf. the later does contain some configurations for intel sof audio parts, but I don't know if having that package installed would solve the micrphone issue or if some other step is involved.

one other thing....go into alsamixer and select your card and make sure the mic is not muted. On a couple of my intel laptops, even when pulseaudio has the mic unmuted, the backend alsa channel is still muted.
