LibreOffice Impress codecs

#1 Post by texchuck »

I recently installed MX19.4 on my laptop (after needing a reinstall due to wifi issues with an MX 17 or 18 install that had worked for some time). 19.4 comes with LibreOffice 6.1.5.2. I am running on a Pentium processor. Impress seemed to run fine until I came to a video segment when teaching a class. It locked up. The video works fine in MX on my desktop running MX18.5 and LibreOffice 6.0.1.1 (and I never had trouble on the laptop with the MX 17 or 18 that I replaced), but not on the new install. This is a pretty standard .mp4 file. The file will run with VLC Media player on the laptop, so I presume it is a codec problem for Impress. I tried running MX Codecs Installer, but that didn't help. I also tried converting the file to h264 and then .ogg using VLC, but those formats completely locked the PC (even cntl-alt-esc didn't kill).

Of course, I can just transition from Impress to VLC for videos or even go back to an earlier MX version. But, maybe I am missing something simple.

Does anyone have experience with Impress and video compatibility?

Thank you.

When I have videos in Impress, I sure them locally and have had no problem--but haven't tried with the newer LO versions.

BTW: you might want to try a version in the 7 series using Package Installer -- MX Test Repo
Production: 5.10, MX-23 Xfce, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 16 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Personal: Lenovo X1 Carbon with MX-23 Fluxbox
Other: Raspberry Pi 5 with MX-23 Xfce Raspberry Pi Respin

I have the files in the same directory, so that is not an issue. I have actually had more trouble with videos and Impress on my wife's Windows PC than I have had on MX to this point. I will have to give the 7 series a look.

Thanks.

Just for information regarding MX-19. I tried LibreOffice 7 on the MX-19 install. It fared even worse and crashed on embedded image files, as well as videos. However for image files, Impress just crashed rather than locking up the PC. Another problem I had with MX-19 was that Dropbox wouldn't run. It claimed there were permission errors. I made sure the existing Dropbox directory (from a previous install) and all internals had user permission, but that didn't help, so was not likely the issue.

I finally just installed MX-18 again. Now, everything works. So, it looks like changes in MX-19 have some incompatibilities with legacy software, at least on this HP 250 laptop. MX is the only OS installed and occupies the entire disk. I really like MX and liked some of the MX-19 features, but don't have the expertise to overcome these issues. I have used MX for years, evolving from the Mepis days.
