Senpai wrote: Tue Aug 03, 2021 2:14 pm Once that was done, I installed MX21 32bits on a partition created from the installer and it installed without problems, and I can happily start testing ;-)
In MX19 on this laptop I had to permanently add to the grub the command "video=SVIDEO-1d", so that it would boot without pausing, without the command it took more than 7 minutes... In MX21 beta1 it doesn't happen to me anymore, I guess it has been corrected in this new kernel...
Good. Please do also test the GRUB menu on the Live System. Also check the translations of the Live GRUB menus.
Hi @fehlix:
I have checked all the Spanish startup menus in Spain, and I have found in:
In "Advanced Options".
When you press "Disable Grub theme" the sentence at the bottom of the screen, (Use the | and | keys to select which entry is highlighted.
Press enter to boot the selected OS, 'e' to edit the commands before booting or 'c' for a command-line- ESC to return provious menu). It does not appear translated into English and I have not found it in any of the Transifex resources for translating it.
Also in:
Boot options:
The phrase (vcard=menu Show video card detecttion menu) does not appear translated, it is also not translated when it is "Enabled Grub theme" and it does not appear in " live-grub.pot ".
The message:
Welcome to MX-21_beta1 (Wildflower)!!!, is not translated and I can't find it in any Transifex resource.

I have a doubt, when you click "Disable Grub Theme" and the theme is disabled, in "Advanced Options" there is an option that says "Grub Theme: Disabled", if you click there, nothing happens Shouldn't the custom Grub theme be re-enabled?

Greetings from Senpai

A suggestion I make is to classify the keyboards like this:
exemple
kbd fr : français France
kbd fr : français Canada
kbd fr : français Suisse
kbd en : english US
kbd en : english UK
etc..
Thanks for the suggestions. Sorting/grouping keyboards is always a bit problematic, b/c keyboard code is not always identical to region/country/language code. So we tried to sort a bit by language within a "flat" menu (without submenus).

grubsave or gfxsave????
I don't know the difference at all, a little explanation would have been nice. I chose randomly: gfxsave
The LiveUSB offers two types of boot menus depending on boot-mode:
In BIOS-boot mode (legacy/CSM) it shows a GFX-menu (through iso-/syslinux bootloader)
in UEFI-boot mode it displays a GRUB-menu (through EFI-grub bootloader)
As both bootloader are fairly different, the option grubsave would made the saved options available for GRUB-menu only. In addition gfxsave would also made the options available within the BIOS GFX-boot menu.

Good point. After disabling GRUB theme it displays GRUB's own internal strings. So we have not included all translations made available by GRUB itself into the live system. Probably at least those shown on the menu to get translated similare we made it for the theme translations.

Thanks. Yes, we played some tricks to get grub-themes translated, b/c the grub-themes normally cannot be translated. To avoid to have for every language another theme file, we kept the "Welcome ... " title untranslated.

That's intentionally one-time-switch due to memory limitation within the GRUB environment. Switching back and force can result in getting GRUB either out of memory or get unresponsive.

A report in case people have the same issue or know how to fix this: NetworkManager -> Edit Connection -> 802.1X Security tab: Authentication cannot be changed. It works if I copy manually copy my config file from /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/ to the MX-21 and restart the service, it enables the 802.1X security options for that specific entry.

@fehlix
thank you for the answer. :-)

I have another suggestion because I have a problem when I partition my usb key.
With "MX Live usb Maker", I install MX.21 on a 64G usb key.
(full-featured mode-writable LiveUSB)
Then, at the first boot with this key, I follow the procedure to condition my key.
When the time comes to partition, the utility provided by MX.21 does not manage to use all the free space on my key. For my last installation on a 64G key, I lost 4.6G of space.
The possibilities offered by the partitioning of the key do not give the possibility to use ALL the available disk space. The MX.21 partitioning utility could offer this possibility.

For example:
rootfs = "x" GB
swap = "x" GB
homefs = "x" GB, or "all the rest of the available space".

This way, there would be no loss of disk space, which is so precious on a flash drive.
_There is also the possibility that I don't understand something in the partitioning offered by the MX Linux utility. If this is the case, just let me know, I'll do some research myself to understand. :-)

Thank you very much for your attention.
Pierre
ps: I use MX Linux 21beta1_x64 on my PC, using a persistent usb stick is an another exciting option in itself.

On LiveUSB with persistence one would keep some free space left on the "main" partition in order to "remaster", which is to squeeze all changes from the rootfs file into a new squashed linuxfs file and a new "empty" rootfs file. MX Live USB Maker allows to have either create an additinal "data" partition (as a first partition so it can be used by WinOS) or leave some %-space unoccupied after the created partitions, which can be used to created manually another partition e.g. using Gparted. In addition the Live-usb-storage feature allows to use directly "free"/unused space on the main partition from a automatically mounted folder Live-usb-storage under users home folder (e.g. to save data directly onto the USB-key.)

Hi @fehlix, well, I'm pleasantly surprised by your response. I was worried about losing disk space but I see that I was worrying about nothing.

I'm still learning and I want to thank you for the time you took to answer me.
Have a nice day
:-)

I had to change repositories this evening from default to GA Tech USA in Atlanta. Upgrade was failing on this file:

Code: Select all

Failed to fetch http://mxrepo.com/mx/repo/pool/main/g/gazelle-installer/mx-installer_21.8.02_amd64.deb
I checked manually with a browser, and it's really not there.

Probably didn't sync yet, wait then do a refresh or change to a different mirror and do a refresh.
