Thank you. Everything is now up and running as it should be. I attached the log, maybe it will be useful. Sorry that it was overwritten.

I've reported this earlier, but the more I've thought about it, the more I think it will be a problem. If you have a USB webcam that is recognised by, and works with, Webcamoid, but you accidentally launch the program with the webcam unplugged, Webcamoid will refuse to recognise the webcam in subsequent attempts. You can reboot, delete the local config file, even purge/reinstall, but that camera won't be detected by Webcamoid again.

The problem does not occur with Cheese. (I'm not an advocate for Cheese; I mention it to show it is a Webcamoid problem.)

(Added)
To make certain this wasn't an MX Linux problem, I tested it the same way with Linux Mint, and had the same failure.

I know that a lot of people have laptops with no built in webcam that have needed to buy a USB one during the pandemic; they will be pretty inconvenienced if it didn't work.

Chris
I cannot duplicate this, however its a little weird. I had to choose my camera from the "Configure Sources" dialog. my camera popups up in that dialog when I plug in it even if webcamoid is running.

note that as far as I can tell, the preferences dialog does not allow switching. you have to use the Configure Sources dialogs.

If I close webcamoid , disconnect the camera and reconnect it. then relaunch webcamoid it again shows up. Again this in MX 19.4. But if I just launch webcamoid without going through that process or leave it active while disconnecting and reconnecting the camera will not be recognized. or show up in the settings dialog.

Edit: I forgot to mention this is an external camera connected to a USB port on my desktop.

You checked both preferences and configure sources?

Missed configure sources. I will go through the scenario again.

EDIT: OK tt was found in the configure sources list and reconnected. Sorry for the confusion on my part.

is good, its not immediately obvious.

I put an arrow in my screenshot on what button to hit for those wondering.

Working for me too now after understanding the process.

Why on earth does Webcamoid not automatically detect the presence of the camera, at least if only one is detected?

Hello, I use DeepL translator to communicate from French to English. Thank you for your understanding if something seems strange in my text.
I am a new Linux user and I installed MX Linux 19.4 on my PC a few days ago. I'm very excited about your distribution. I am testing MX 21 on a 16G usb stick. I quickly share this experience with you.

I created a 16G usb stick with MX Live usb Maker.
MX-21_beta1_64.iso
- full-featured mode-writable LiveUSB
% 100
MX Live usb Maker is very fast to create the key: 1m 27s

When I restarted my PC, I chose UEFI.
Setting language-keyboard-time zone was fine.
A suggestion I make is to classify the keyboards like this:
exemple
kbd fr : français France
kbd fr : français Canada
kbd fr : français Suisse
kbd en : english US
kbd en : english UK
etc..

Advanced options
persist-static root and home separate on the usb device
grubsave or gfxsave????
I don't know the difference at all, a little explanation would have been nice. I chose randomly: gfxsave
I saved the options and the boot screen said at the bottom left of the screen: UEFI

In console mode, before the first boot, I created
default rootfs = 6G
homefs default = 1,66G
swap = my choice = 4G
The homefs partition is not really useful for the moment because I am only testing the persistence of the MX Linux system on a USB stick.
And I started from those options.
_____

I updated the system in console mode right away to check the "persistence" on my flash drive.

Code: Select all

$ su -

Code: Select all

# apt-get update

Code: Select all

# apt-get dist-upgrade

Code: Select all

# apt-get autoclean

Code: Select all

# reboot
The system worked hard and updated itself.
The persistence is fully operational, the system is ok after the reboot.
_____

My observations:
Creation of the usb key with MX Live usb Maker very fast and intuitive.
The configuration of the options at the first startup of the USB flash drive is a little confusing for a beginner because the options are numerous. I had to study a bit to make a persistent flash drive and the information is not much. I made many attempts and many mistakes to get it right.

But now that I understand a little bit better, I find the process of installing a Linux MX distribution very fast and efficient. You have to persevere if you are a beginner like me.

I'm going to test the software of the distribution now but I'm already very satisfied with the version 19.4 so I'm convinced that the version 21 can only be better.
I take advantage of my message to congratulate all the people who contribute to the MX Linux adventure. Congratulations!

MX 21 installed 28.07.2021 work as primary OS without problems.
no problem with PC and used SW (Corel Aftershot pro, Darktable, GIMP, LO, Mixx).
no problem with games (Legend of Grimrock (nixinstaller), CnC Tiberian Sun, OpenRA, 0AD, ShadowRun Returns)
