Senpai wrote: Sun Aug 01, 2021 11:27 am Installed MX21 beta1 32/64 bits on my test laptop "Acer Aspire 5715Z", from a USB with Ventoy, the installation occurs without errors on a single partition (/ and /home together and 4GB of swap), I install Grub in the MBR but when booting I get the message "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". I checked that Grub is installed in Sda and in the root partition of MX21, I boot again in the live usb and reinstall Grub with the MX tool, but the result is the same, the option to repair Grub doesn't work either...
I have not been able to continue with the tests because none of the 2 versions installs... In that same partition I had a respin of MX 19.4 without problems.
When I boot again with the live usb, I find that in the installation on disk in /home there is no folder created ???
Any help to continue with the real tests?
Hi:
It seems that nobody else has had this problem with the Grub or MBR happen to them, thank God..., as the installation did not boot I cannot provide the "minstall.log", to check if it was a beta1 problem or simply my disk got tired of so much rewriting the Grub....
I tried to reinstall with MX19, but it kept giving the error, it seems that the MBR or the MSDos table has been corrupted... I had to create it again losing my respin installations of MX19, fortunately this is a test laptop...
Once that was done, I installed MX21 32bits on a partition created from the installer and it installed without problems, and I can happily start testing ;-)
In MX19 on this laptop I had to permanently add to the grub the command "video=SVIDEO-1d", so that it would boot without pausing, without the command it took more than 7 minutes... In MX21 beta1 it doesn't happen to me anymore, I guess it has been corrected in this new kernel...

Good. Please do also test the GRUB menu on the Live System. Also check the translations of the Live GRUB menus.

Fixed thunar-shares-plugin 0.3.1+ds1-1 sent up for inclusion in the repos for MX-21, give it time to show up.

For those that don't know it adds some capabilities to share directly from the Folder Properties in Thunar - adds "Share" tab.
Its only part of the solution to do smb/samba sharing. The plugin works great, but it doesn't provide options for all the advanced smb/samba sharing and user stuff.

If you install this version, its adds anyone who is in the sudoers group to the sambashare group (made a hacky postint script to do it), you need to logout and back in for it all to work.
Sorry can't change the relogin thing, I tried quickly but its not a matter of restarting smbd, nmbd, and the likes. If we install it OOTB later, it shouldn't be an issue.

Edit: just a note, this version includes updated .po files for translations added to the original source tarball, which is why the +ds1 is there. I couldn't test them all, so if someone sees language issues just say so.

Don't mention it boss, it wasn't overly hard at all, I just had to figure out what the heck the problems were.... starting with why the previous .deb was so much smaller... which was because it wasn't a good build at all. So not surprising folks had issues with it if they tried it. 9_9

@dolphin_oracle

In MX Tweak >> Theme tab, your icons pane does not search for icons in the $HOME/.local/share/icons folder. XFCE's Appearance tool does (because it's a pretty standard location). Plasma looks for icons in that folder rather than $HOME/.icons.

I just installed KDE Standard on the MX21 alpha VM to check it out, and Plasma could not find the icons in the $HOME/.icons folder. So I shifted them to the .local/icons folder, only for them to no longer appear in your MX Tweak >> Theme pane when I logged back into XFCE. I was able to set them by using Appearance tool.

Booting 64-live, when language selection includes more than two keyboard layouts, the keyboard layout indicator goes missing.
For example, selecting on the boot menu Español (España), it comes with two keyboard layouts (es, us) and when the desktop is shown, the keyboard layout indicator appears, showing the Spanish flag, and if clicked, switching to the US flag.
But, if selecting on the boot menu Español (México), it comes with three keyboard layouts (es, latam, us) and when the desktop is shown, the keyboard layout indicator goes missing.
The keyboard layout indicator goes missing with any combination Español (country) that comes with three keyboard layouts.
The keyboard layout indicator IS SHOWN with any combination Español (country) that comes with two keyboard layouts, like Español (España) or Español (Estados Unidos) that only come with es, us.

@SwampRabbit
Quick review after updating the package: (rebooted)

1. Rt click > Share menu doesn't work as before only asking for password and nothing then happens.
2. Folder properties share tab shows options though. Notice the icon at top-left; looks like default-gnome.
3. Configured a folder and tried it to access from networks tab in thunar to test.
Asks for password, but fails to authenticate even if correct. (I'm using the current logged in user password; it's a single character one for this beta install. Does that matter?)
4. If I choose anonymous, it denies access (that's ok), but dialog then goes into disabled mode; cannot change options ; have to hit cancel to retry.
Same for a failed attempt for registered user.
5. Folder configured and accessed as anonymous works in thunar browsing.

I explained this in the follow on post... maybe I wasn't clear enough though...
viewtopic.php?p=647071#p647071

This is only part of the solution to get all the smb/samba stuff easily going through simple GUI tools. We aren't finished with everything to get everyone a fully functioning easy to use solution OOTB.

1. the right-click menu has nothing to do with this plugin, when you perform the right-click it runs this

Code: Select all

gnome-keyring-daemon -r -d;gksu system-config-samba %d
notice that thing that is missing? ... that's why it doesn't do what you think or want it to do

2-4. it works, I tested it 10 ways to Tuesday before I sent it up. As I said in my follow on post to the one you quoted, this plugin does not set up everything smb/samba related.
Samba isn't fully set up for simple point and click use, but all of that can be done via the old fashioned way through changing the samba config files that were mentioned previously, this used to be handled by the old system-config-samba tool, and we are working a solution to replace that hopefully soon.

3-4. If you set "Allow Guest Access" and "Allow other users to write to this folder" you will see the plugin itself works without needing to do the samba user and permission work for shares.
To get fully customized and scaled shared folders with user permissions that has to be done via the configuration files or you have to wait for us to finish getting everything ready

I'm not trying to dog your feedback, but it seems you didn't read or understand my follow on post to the one you quoted.

I spent my lunch break and an hour and a half extra of my day rummaging through the previous failed build package, fixing the build issue, then fixing getting the user added to the sambashares group at install, then tested it across three systems. Talked to dolphin_oracle on Slack a bit. Signed the packages, archived them up, sent an PM to get them added to the repo, then made my second post as fast and detailed as I could to reduce confusion and not get feedback like this.

Its just kinda depressing to do all that while hastily stuffing food in my face and trying to do normal work at the same time (2 hours and 29mins total)... and still have someone tell you that what you did doesn't actually work.

I'm sorry if that seems harsh, I really don't mean it to be, maybe I'm taking some feedback the wrong way, maybe I need to not put in all the effort for awhile and take a break from this. :needcoffee:

Please don't take that the wrong way
