WINE not working (anymore)  [Solved]

#1 Post by ancer »

Good morning!

two weeks ago I migrated to wonderful KDE MX (I have a relatively new hardware and my old PC died). I installed WINE and it worked fine. Then I had some issues with remembering passwords, so I tried a MX kfce version first, but because I prefer this one (KDE), I changed back. I installed Wine again. And it doesn't work anymore. Like before It does install, open a configuration, allows me to choose Windows version, I confirm Windows 7, close the window, try to run MS windows installation file and at this point nothing much more happens. I think (not 100% sure) the first time (two weeks ago) the WINE version was 5.0.4 and now it is 6.5-1 (both occasions I installed WINE directly from MX package installer/popular applications).
I don't run many Micro$oft apps on Linux, but there are some small applications like "Irfanview" and "YASC sokoban" that I really don't want to live without.
By the way, my 2 years old laptop runs Linux Mint and there I have WINE 4 - works perfectly for me.
I'm not trying to suggest that older versions of WINE were better, and maybe I'm doing something wrong with this current one.

Thank You

Run MX Repo Manager from the main menu and change your MX mirror to one of these: (These are MX's own mirrors. The others are voluntarily run by various third parties and many of them appear to have been neglected since early 2020 and may no longer be working properly.) Then click Apply and run

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
in a terminal to load the new mirror's package list. Then reinstall wine from MXPI Popular Applications.

It's not the first time I hear complaints about Wine versions getting worse.
You could remove wine completely (so also the hidden .wine folder in your home directory) and then install the 4.0 version (package 'wine' in the stable repo)

Thank You both for Quick answers!
well, JayM I've done what You suggest - no cigar, the same thing as before, when I run a MS Windows installation file (exe) "wine windows program loader" opens for a few seconds, after that nothing. A guess it's this current version of WINE that doesn't run correctly (at least in my computer).

If you install the 4.0 version, you probably need to select 'Also install recommended packages'. Otherwise you don't get 32-bit libraries and I don't see how Wine would work without these.

I also tried with wine64 - still something missing. Doesn't work.
