@Huckleberry Finn I did what you told me:
MX 18.3 installed, 4.15 pae kernel installed,
set by boot options, tried to install nvidia driver
from MX tools, but nothing to do, this comes out:

Code: Select all

Some packages cannot be installed. This can mean
that an impossible situation has been requested or, if you are
using a development distribution, which some packages required
have not yet been created or have been removed from Incoming.
The following information can help resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 nvidia-legacy-304xx-driver: Depends: nvidia-legacy-304xx-driver-libs (= 304.137-6 ~ mx17 + 1) but it is not going to be installed
                              Depends: nvidia-legacy-304xx-driver-bin (= 304.137-6 ~ mx17 + 1) but it is not going to be installed
                              Depends: xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-legacy-304xx (= 304.137-6 ~ mx17 + 1) but it is not going to be installed

                              Depends: nvidia-legacy-304xx-alternative (= 304.137-6 ~ mx17 + 1) but is not going to be installed
Recommend: nvidia-persistenced but not about to be installed
 nvidia-legacy-304xx-kernel-dkms: Depends: nvidia-legacy-304xx-kernel-support - v1

Recommend: libgl1-nvidia-legacy-304xx-glx but it is not going to be installed

First I made the updates and he gave me this message

Code: Select all

Install these packages without verifying them? [s / N]
If it is not possible to resolve, I leave it alone.
Tell me :-)

Did you try this one or installing with the default 4.19 ?

Shortly, as a workaround, issue this in a terminal (that will create the required file).

Logout & Login (or reboot)

Start "Nvidia Driver Installer" ...

In case it works and Nvidia gets installed, but you face a black screen at next boot:

Ctrl+Alt+F1 Login Manually (type username and pw.), then :

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Code: Select all

sudo reboot

I did the whole procedure, and the driver installed.
On reboot, the only kernel that gained access to the system was the 4.15.0-1-686-pae i686 kernel.
But the system continues to use the noveau driver.
I add system logs.

On Grub menu hit E (when 4.15 is highlighted) and add

Code: Select all

modprobe.blacklist=nouveau
(the line at the bottom that begins with linux... ) after ... ro quiet splash ...

... ro quiet splash modprobe.blacklist=nouveau

hit F10 to go on boot.

Also, since you didn't face a black screen maybe you didn't need to do that, but if there's such a file, delete :

/etc/X11/xorg.conf

added modprobe.blacklist = nouveau f10 for reboot, screen with big icons appears, and keep using nouveau.
In the X11 folder I don't find xorg.conf files, but xorg.conf.in

It seems to me Nvidia just appeared "as if" it was installed ... and no, that one's another file...

(Meanwhile it needs to be exactly as above, without spaces)

Yes, i done without spaces.
Nvidia server setting appears in the dash, but it always uses nouveau as a driver.

Menu => "MX Boot Options" : into "Kernel Parameters" box (with a space after the others... ) :

Code: Select all

rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau rdblacklist=nouveau
Apply. (In fact just one is enough; they're similar, this is the "crazy way" :D )

Code: Select all

sudo echo -e 'blacklist nouveau\nblacklist lbm-nouveau\nalias nouveau off\nalias lbm-nouveau off\noptions nouveau modeset=0' | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau-blacklist.conf

Code: Select all

sudo update-initramfs -uk all ; sudo update-grub
Reboot.

Hello Huckleberry Finn.
Is this command enough?
