Initramfs: Dropping to a Shell

#1 Post by majix »

Hi,
I installed MX-19.3_base_386 on a 32 gb usb stick, but after booting I was being faced whit this:

Gave up waiting for root file system device. Common problems:
- Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! UUID/e1babb99-9537-409f-bb62-0833308cfad5 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

BusyBox v1.30.1 (Debian 1:1.30.1-4) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
(initramfs)

Sorry friends, I am a newbie in linux world, if there is a solution please explain it in a clear and simple way.
Thank you so much.

Hello majix,

how did you install MX? I guess you used two usb sticks. One ist the installer-stick and the other is the stick on which you installed MX, right? Was the 32gb-stick plugged in the same computer as it was during the installation process?

Best regards,
Leonard

Hello Leonard,

Yes, the ISO (installer) on 4gb-stick in the side usb port of laptop (Dell inspiron 6400) and the 32gb-stick was plugged in the rear. Installation took one hour to complete.

Thank you for your time.

Suggest, you post "Quick System Info". This tool is found within the menu favorites or in MX tools.
Note the output is copied into the clipboard automatically. If not copy paste here between those code-tags
like those here
for better readability.

When you booted from the "ISO": The question was how did you created the ISO-bootStick, what tool did you have used?

And when you said you have installed onto 32bg USB stick, did you used the "Installer" found on the desktop? Or did you used "MX Live USB Maker" to install onto the 32GB USBdevice.

In case you used the Installer on the desktop: That might be a not so good idea, b/c it is meant to be used to install ontoa fast (internal) hd. OK, some USB-3 usb-drives are meanwhile also very fast. But your Dell Inspiron 6400 appears to have only slow USB-2 ports. So suggest, to not use the Installer on the desktop but use MX Live USB maker tool.

In addition: this Dell Inspiron 6400 seems to have a S-VIDEO port, and it is known that the S-Video port triggers a kernel-bug which makes the whole system very slow.
You can stop the kernel-bug by manually adding this boot parameter:

Code: Select all

video=SVIDEO-1:d
:puppy:
