My ISP just upgraded me from 200Mbps to 400Mpbs for 30% less cost per month. I'm hitting top download speed of 479Mbps now. It seems like more speed than I can find a use for - when I go to my aunt's house with her 60Mbps I can't really tell a difference. Upload speed is only 23Mbps, but that's also double what I used to get.
How does this compare to people in other parts of the world? I'm in Texas.

Here in rural England I'm lucky to get 55 Mbps. That's on FTTC, which is a copper/fibre hybrid. I'm quite envious -- but as you say, it's fast enough for most things.

I have what is considered in the UK a fairly fast cable connection - 200Mbps down, 20Mbps up. Ping is usually in single figures; pity I'm not a gamer! I can pay an extra 30UKP/month and get 630Mbps, but that would be completely over the top for my needs.
What is more important to me is consistency. In the hundreds of times I have tested, I always get 200Mbps minimum. Neighbours connecting via the phone line can get 40 - 60 Mbps one time, then 20Mbps the next time they test.

Yeah, I wouldn't pay extra for this speed increase, but they dropped my bill by $25 a month so I'm not complaining. I'm in Toronto, Canada and I pay Rogers $200 / mo. for TV, unlimited internet, home phone, and cell phone (talk and text only). My download speed over wifi is 277 Mbps and my upload is 22 Mbps. My ping is 9 ms.

277 Mbps over wifi seems like a lot. mine is marketed as 500 up and 500 down and costs 590 baht a month (15 dollars?)
i actually get speeds closer to 320 up and down ,...which is great since i literally live in the middle of a rice paddy far from civilization ... in real terms it means i can download a 4 gig movie at about 30 MB/s ..... and is finished before i click to search for another one
the upload speed is really useful since i share my movie collection on a plex server with a few people

320 up is amazing. I don't know about the rest of America, but in Texas this is the first I've ever gotten above about 15 Mbps up. In my case, the "cable distributor/agent" runs the last-mile fiber infrastructure and offers choice of 3 ISPs on the same GPON - by means of different local static IP ranges or VLAN. One can change ISP after a month finishes by letting them know. They aggregate various local GPONs to their level 2 switch and then on to the core infrastructure.
I currently have upto 60Mbps plan for about US$ 8/month. Acceptable service quality and speeds, though goes into dead mode for some minutes of the day (maybe work on their core routers or reboot their switches,etc. ?)
These days, most of the streaming services like youtube, netflix, amazon prime etc. or even whatsapp, facebook, google have local caching/data infrastructure here in India, so local routes and caching are used and it can saturate the pipe. However, connections to other different or isolated parts of the world (from my perspective) are quite slow (and it's a norm for international bandwidth which is quite costly). Upload speeds are near as promised and way better than DL avg speed. (as people tend to upload less than download)
As for MX repo with best DL speed from here, I find DotSRC Denmark often peaking at 7MBps or 56Mbps which beats any other mirror on MX repo list. Maybe they have a very good route to the EU/Denmark!

I live in a semi-rural area on the east coast of the USA, but only three miles from a small city. For the roughly seven years I have lived here, I have been stuck with 10Mbps/0.8Mbps DSL (almost $80 a month for several years until they got tired of me complaining to them about it and reduced it to $35 a month). 50Mbps/5Mbps cable internet was available, but only if I paid the cable company almost a grand to run their equipment a hundred feet closer.
Well, a few months ago I got fed up waiting for Starlink so began trying to see what other options there may have been. I found out that T-Mobile is offering home internet (5g) at my location ($55 a month). Well, got the new router about a month ago and dang it's fast. I've seen about 100Mbps down and 50Mbps up. Sometimes it's faster, sometimes it's slower. For some, that speed is "so so", but for me, it's a huge upgrade. I recently downloaded the MX ISO in under three minutes. Unheard of for me.
That all being said, it seems that there is never really "too much speed" when it comes to internet. Some people may say "what in the world do you want with so much bandwidth?", I say that the higher the speed, the less time you will spend waiting. The difference between 10Mbps and 100Mbps is huge. Page load speeds are almost instant now regardless of page size. Video buffering just doesn't happen anymore. Of course, I remember the days of 28kbps.... a lot has changed in my lifetime, and a lot will continue to change.
