Update:-

Vmware's latest offering (16) installed and running on MX19.3 here now, but it behaves just like v15 on MX18: will not run a guest because "....vmmon missing*.

Behaviour of Vmware is different now: when trying to start the guest no mention of vmmon; instead the popup says "The virtual machine is powered off or suspended"

You should search the web and/or take this to VMWare's own support forum.

Sorry to revive this old thread but I am still experiencing this problem:-
Vmware player runs fine with systemd but not with sysvinit.

Could systemd-shim be improved to make vmware work with sysvinit?

its not systemd-shim, systemd-shim loads neither kernel modules nor starts services. its the fact that I'm pretty sure vmmware needs an init script that works with sysVinit.

Thanks D_O.
So I really have to continue using systemd  for vmware: sysvinit works fine for everything else I need.

Stay safe,

David.

Possibly. Or possibly an init script could be written if the systemd stuff is just launching a service or something.

I recently installed VMWare Player, and I ran into the same problem. I resolved it by adding the following line to /etc/rc.local:

/etc/init.d/vmware start
