MX18-2 Change Bootscreen

#1 Post by b3nua »

Hi all,

I've already looked for something in the forum but haven't found a suitable answer.
I use MX18.2 Live System on USB Persistence. And i want to change the Bootscreen.

i found the current images in usr/share/plymouth/themes/mx-linux/ and changed the script.script for my files
but nothing happend? how can i find out where i am making the right changes? or how do I change the boot screen correctly?

thank you very much
regards
b3

I guess you mean the background (no plymouth / splashscreen by default on 18 ). If it's just the background (or adding some boot parameters in Boot Options), that's easy...

When not booted with (just attach the usb as any usb stick on any installed system, no matter Linux / Windows)

/media/yourusername/MX ..(whatever it is )/boot/grub/theme/gfx_background.jpg

and background.jpg

(on MX 18 it may be directly in /boot/grub rather than theme folder)

Just resize your new picture like them and rename to these names ...

(You can rename the original ones to ...jpg.old or copy-paste to somewhere else (backup) beforehand )

Are you using the MX18 live system on UEFI boot or legacy BIOS boot?

From what I understand, in legacy BIOS, the live system uses syslinux instead of grub2 as the bootloader. And if so, you can't change the background from the grub file locations or MX Boot Options.

If you are on UEFI boot of your MX18 live stick, note that by default MX18 uses the normal grub boot menu and does not apply a grub theme.

For the normal grub boot menu, you can specify which picture file you wish to be the menu background by editing the "GRUB_BACKGROUND= " line in the /etc/default/grub file to point to the file path of the new picture you want to set as background.

However, you either have to use a png file, or a jpg file that is 8-bit (256 colours). See this link for what pic files work and which don't.

You can either manually edit the /etc/default/grub file and then do a "sudo update-grub",

or

use MX Boot Options to do so. In MX Boot Options, select the picture file you want to set as "background", and then click "Apply" (which will then run sudo update-grub)
