my alternative name for MX

#1 Post by lonesomepoint »

I was just reading the explanation for the name MX--essentially "MEPIS + Antix." Just a succinct way to represent the description "a cooperative venture between the antiX and MX Linux communities."

Without (wrongly) thinking I mean to criticize the designers' choice, does anyone want to know what I would have called it had I been the designer?

Mepix. (Well, as long as Warren Woodford didn't object.)

Warren objected to the use of MEPIS. he still owns MEPIS.

Yeah, why use a registered name.

BTW, I'm curious, is this related to Warren or somebody stole his mark? http://mepisinc.com/

But I said Mepix, not MEPIS. I'll assume you're saying Mr. Woodford would just think it was still too similar. That would have been too bad, because that's sort of the point. Your creation fills the exact same niche as MEPIS, without being MEPIS.

I disliked MEPIS name in the first place, Mepix is not much better and the one letter difference is disrespectful to the brand (not sure about the legal ramifications), MX is a perfect, short name, we are not looking to change it.

Um, yes, and I hope I didn't annoy you. I strongly suspected I would; but I was in a cheerful mood and so was willing to risk it. I don't want you to change the name.

I do know the stated explanation of the name MEPIS--the Skype call with the bad connection. Personally, I find that story--e.g., that "MEPIS" is a meaningless piece of gibberish and Mr. Woodford used it anyway--amusing, while simultaneously appreciating that "MEPIS" is a completely unique word that could help you memorize it by making you wonder where it came from.

Yes, but you cannot really use the name just by adding an "inc" at the end, do you think I could use "microsoftinc.com"?
