Tiger Lake Laptop

#1 Post by ChrisUK »

(Mods, please move if better-suited in another sub-forum)

No idea how often I'll log in here, as I've had a lot going on IRL for months (No, not Covid related... though that too) - but as I bought a new Laptop with the latest Tiger Lake processor and Iris XE integrated GFX, I thought I'd post my experiences so far. I'm hoping this will help the devs as I'm running a Kernel and Virtual box from the test repo.

Firstly, no matter what I tried (The Dell Bios has more options than you can imagine) the MX19.3 USB would not boot - it got about half way, never got to a desktop. I tried with other Linux USBs (Linux Lite, Q40S) - same result. So I downloaded the AHS version of MX and it booted first time. Installed without error.

Touchpad worked, but it was missing a couple of features (no scrolling etc) and was only recognised as PS2 Mouse in the Mouse Settings- so, I tried the 5.9.0-5mx-amd64 Kernel... touchpad works as it should.

Virtual Box was messed up (wouldn't load kernel module etc) - tried the version in test repo (6.1.16) - works fine.

Everything else (Function Keys - Brightness Volume Keyboard Backlight etc), all work. Sleep/resume all OK. So far everything works great (and fast).

I will be back properly, just not sure when. I will drop-in to check for any questions concerning this post.

In the meantime stay safe people... things will improve... eventually ;)

Good to hear from you.

Tough going in the UK right now with the mutated strain and the current lockdown. It makes sense to cancel the Christmas relaxation of the lockdown rules, but of course it's a major downer.

It's certainly affecting family members there.

Just a quick update:

All of my Laptops and PCs (Yes, I have a few ;) ) are workhorses, not often used for entertainment, so I just discovered that everything is perfect with the 5.9.0-5 kernel... except for sound... there isn't any ;) No audio device recognised - So I'll suffer the loss of touchpad scrolling and go back to the 5.8.0-3 kernel for now.

Yes, and it just got worse... they've just found two cases of the South Africa variant here too. The Christmas side doesn't bother me, I'd happily move to the Arctic or Antarctic, except they've just found Covid cases there too. I have to say that I don't feel positive about the future of Mankind - OTOH the rest of the Animal Kingdom could do with rest from people anyway ;)

Hi Chris, maybe you try

Code: Select all

snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver=1
in boot options with 5.9 (though mic. may not work this time, in case you necessarily need that)

Thanks, I'll reinstall 5.9.0-5 kernel tomorrow and report back whether it helped.

Well that restored the audio with the 5.9.0-5 kernel, thanks for that. I've not tested the microphone, as the last time I remember using one was with windows 95, and that was a very long time ago ;)

Maybe they'll have fixed those quirks in later kernels. I'm going to try backports of 5.10.2 from Debian Experimental later on tonight for the test repo.

Hmm.. the boot option worked like a charm for me, until.. yesterday.

Now I lost sound again, although I can send it to HDMI but.. no speakers anymore. And the speaker symbol on the bottom of the screen turned to grey.

Tried removing the "snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver=1" making the speaker icon white again but also no sound, applying it again resulted in changing the icon to grey once more and still no sound.
Press any key to continue, any other key to quit
