wifi password keeps asking for authentication in acer aspire one netbook

#1 Post by meurglys »

I have an ancient Acer Aspire One netbook and I can't seem to get the wifi to work. I'm using the 32-bit version of MXLinux 19-3. It installed fine, and Network-Manager lists my wifi connection. When I imput the password it tries to connect but keeps bringing up the authentication box for verification over and over again.

I had similar issues with Windows 7 on it. I did a factory reset on the netbook and it wouldn't play nice with the wireless either.

Thinking it might be a hardware issue, but hopefully, there's something else you can suggest.

@JayM......I can't connect to the internet from the Netbook to post the QSI. Seems to be a Broadcom card though, in dormant mode.

You're able to post in the forum so you must have some Internet access. You can run Quick System Info, then create a new text document named qsi.txt, open it and right-click paste, save, then copy it to a USB stick and use the computer with Internet access to post the system info or attach the text file.

What do

Code: Select all

lspci
and

Code: Select all

rfkill list
in a terminal show?

Edit: also see https://mxlinux.org/wiki/hardware/broadcom-wireless-2/

Edit 2: Also search the forum for BCM4312

And the forum search? I've found
viewtopic.php?p=568787#p568787
viewtopic.php?f=107&t=56250&p=560036&hi ... 12#p560036

and there are probably others that contain things to try. Also there are the wifi troubleshooting steps in section 3.4.2 of the manual to try.

It sounds as though your wifi card is detected but just can't authenticate with your router's SSID so it could also be a settings issue with the type of wifi encryption the router's set for. I saw somewhere that that that chipset can only use one type but I can't remember if it was PSK or EAP. Most routers have a combination of these encryption types available so any device should be able to connect if you set it to use that combo.

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/syslog | grep Network
.to see what Network Manager is doing

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/syslog | grep wlan0
assuming wlan0 is the wireless interface < inxi>network readout clarifies it is wlan0>. Been a long while since I played with a ZG5. No SD card boot functions in bios. To boot SD card. Need a usb adapter to sd .
No bios update to fix that.

I remember I screwed up once getting the sd card slot to work in older release and kernels. My grub line edit cause the wifi card to get hot after a hour.
Took me a long time to figure that safu out.

Gave the acer aspire to my deceased father-in-law. After taking linux off of it. He was a old career marine set in his ways.
I am semi sick so I won't be of much help in this.
