Best color theme for poor vision? [ANSWERED]

#1 Post by Redacted »

Because of poor vision I've always used themes with very light background and black text. Every time I've tried to use dark themes, everything seems blurry. (I try to play old dos text adventures, but just can't read the text).
But - I notice a lot of people mention that dark themes are good for their bad eyesight.
Have I just not given myself time to adjust to the major change from light to dark?
I tend to resist change, so sometimes I have to force myself if it's better in the long run.
Thanks for any opinions.

Not sure if this applies, but I've always found pure black and pure white to be very hard on my eyes. So when ever I can, I lighten the background, and pick a fairly bold color for the text.

Hope this helps.

People usually say that dark themes are good for their eyes because the screen emits less light and so, hurts their eyes less... If you see better using light background and black text, do stick with it. Also you can use some accessibility options, like a screen magnifier- you can, for example, install "kmag" from synaptic- that probably will help you read those old dos text adventures!

Thanks to both of you.
It certainly does help. My concern was that I was missing something better for me because of some difficulty in adjusting.
As far as emitting too much light, my monitor has excellent settings for light.
Never thought of using magnifier. Got to see if it works with full screen DOSbox.
Thanks!
(BTW, kind of like that yellow on black. Good to try in the terminal)

Have you tried experimenting with different fonts?
I find that makes a big difference.

Though this may not be directly related, playing with screen color temperature may be helpful, too:

And simple to use.. say, in a Terminal sct 3400

Also you can assign keyboard shortcuts ...

Yeah, in fact I set my fonts pretty high. Problem is, it doesn't seem to help with dark themes.

Pretty interesting article at iristech. Like the color graphs. But, same as above.

I would recommend increasing DPI which has worked well in my case as my eyesight is not what it use to be. Also make sure you have the display settings set to the maximum of what your monitor and GPU can display. You can also experiment with different themes which might help. https://www.xfce-look.org/browse/cat/135/order/latest/
I am command line illiterate. I copy & paste to the terminal. Liars, Wiseguys, Trolls, and those without manners will be added to my ignore list.

Thanks for the suggestions and the link.
Just to make clear, I'm fairly satisfied with the light color theme I've got. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing out on something better.
So I'll stick with this advice:
