About Gmic for Gimp [solved with installation of gmic 2.8.4 using MX Package Installer>MX Test Repo]

#1 Post by Zuul »

Hello,

I hope my request is in the good thread.
Otherwide please move it to the right place.

After having tried to install GMIC for Gimp within Mx, I noticed that Gmic did'nt launch.
So i installed the native version then it runned fine.

Would you integrate the last Debian Gimp Gmic (debian 10 buster) into the official repositories ?
It is very interesting to use it.

Thanks by advance.

this is the right place for this

but one question about your request, you are asking for the last Debian 10 gimp-gmic package?

MX-19 is based on Debian 10 so it gets all the packages Debian 10 has unless we package newer versions.
So gimp-gmic 2.4.5 which is in Debian 10 can be installed in MX-19 already.

Are you asking for a newer version? I see 2.9 exists

You installed this "native" version?

Lol
I firstly tried to install Gmic with Gimp full but Gmic did not run.
I secondly tried to install Gmic within Synaptic and it did not run.
Thirdly I downloaded the external debian 10 plugin and moved it to the gimp plugins folder and it runned.
Mx Linux 19.2 64 bits.
=> The last Gmic version is 2.9.1 and not 2.4.5.1.

Ok, thank you.

I can't speak for the package that comes from Debian, I can look at it at some point though.

One thing you can do is remove what you put in the gimp plugins folder and install the gmic 2.8.4 using MX Package Installer > MX Test Repo tab.

I will look at gimp-gmic 2.9 soon

Great! This is very good to know, it will help making sure we package 2.9 properly.

Should not take long, but no promises, maybe within one week at the most. :crossfingers:

The reason why the standard Debian version won't work in MX is that it needs special commands in its .desktop files in order for GIMP and Krita to pick it up. I patched our 2.8.4 version to use those commands. We should probably move it to main.

I couldn't get the versions newer than 2.8.4 to build, and I couldn't find any newer debianized sources. It's also orphaned in Debian and Ubuntu.

I was able to get it to build, haven’t tested it yet, will tomorrow. I may walk one of our new guys through it too.

The developer’s change log has a note about moving to a newer version of cmake, after updating the control file and dropping that in local_repo, it built using your previous debian folder. I may have made another change but it may be confusing this with another package.
