Create a live usb-stick with systemrescuecd which contains ddrescue and photorec.

Before using photorec use ddrescue.

CD and DVD media wear out. Ddrescue - not: dd_rescue - can recover failing bits up to a point.

Afterwards the performance of photorec improves.

Yep.. Google is totally going to disappear.

My experience is that paid service companies are more prone to bankruptcy and then only the big boys get their data back. So.. loss loss.

I'm guessing that is sarcastic. Mind if I retweet it on Google Hangouts? Oh wait... :p

Google Hangouts is now Google Chat. Still going strong. And previous conversations still there.

Of course that is sarcastic, I thought that was clear from the rest of the comment. Putting a 9_9 behind it would have made it clearer, but would have made it insulting, which was not my intent.

With all the lawsuits for breach of trust, privacy, and defamation Google is constantly fighting, there may come one which will break them when some country's government gets sick of them flouting regulations. I wouldn't put money on them not disappearing in my lifetime (and I'm an older pensioner now).

Just another vote for Testdisk/Photorec... I've used it successfully to recover files from otherwise unreadable Fat32/NTFS Windows drives

Yes, dear. OP was answered in the first couple of replies so a little vaguely related discourse shouldn't hurt. If it distracts from the topic, then it's an issue.
