[Answered] VirtualBox: Error when starting.

#1 Post by Duliwi »

Code: Select all

VirtualBox 6.1.2

Problem:
Whenever I start my MX Linux guest in MX Linux host I get this "MX Linux-error":
VM Linux Eror.png
But the VM nevertheless starts. (But the fact, that there is this error shows me, that something is not in order. But what?

However: From time to time my Linux VM suddenly breaks down. Mostly when I try to use the bidirectional Clipboard.

I have not this error message, when I start a Windows guest.

Any idea? Thank you.

you probably wouldn't notice with a windows guest anyway since windows hides most boot messages.

Its that graphics driver starting up and failing to send some message to a host system log. its probably a vmware feature that isn't supported in virtualbox by default. I would guess you can ignore it.

virtualbox is transitioning to using vmsvga graphics drviers instead of VBoxSVGA drivers. all sorts of weird little messages pop up from time to time.

You can also use the VBoxSVGA drivers which are selectable in the Display area of the VM settings. But I'm starting to like the vmsvga drivers because they perform better and support 3d acceleration in the vm.

Thank you @dolphin_oracle

So I ignore this message and just make nothing. When you say vmsvga drivers is better I just stick to it.

You would likely be better off using KVM/Qemu instead of Virtual Box. For the most part it's already built into the kernel. You just need a few packages to set it up and control it. It works a lot better than VB and no closed source or error messages to be concerned with.

Thank you @eriefisher for the tip with KVM/Qemu.

I did not know this program. I was thinking, that VirtualBiox is the only seriously open source VM for Linux.

Nevertheless, I found a user, who changed back from KVM/Qemu to VirtualBox.

See here:
viewtopic.php?f=136&t=59300&hilit=QEMU#p586886

He says something like this:
I want to switch back from KVM/Qemu to VirtualBox because I noticed in "MX Linux" that there are also disadvantages! For example, the Usb connection is not passed through. [...]. It seems to me that qemu is more suitable for server use.
Questions:
-Do you also have problems with your USB connection?
-Is this true? Is qemu really more suitable for server use?

I have not had the need for it as of yet but as far as I know usb pass through is completely possible. You can add hardware and discs as needed. I find it more stable than VB and no vboxdrv issues all the time. I can run it a full screen with native resolution which I'm not sure VB will do, Maybe?? I also find it better on the resources than VB. If you already have virtual disc created with VB KVM/Qemu will import them without issue. Once you look at you will find it very similar to VB as far as creating virtual discs and playing with hardware.

Yes. VB can do this too.
