I just discovered that this package exists. It has been officially taken up by Arch & is on its way through the Manjaro repos heading for Stable.

This one, from their blog, shows what their attitude is to "mass-surveillance":

From what I read, it is a most excellent package, open source, peer reviewed & secure. :)

Re: Signal-Desktop encrypted communications package
Have you tried adding their apt repository and key? Since it's one of those big fat Electron applications, the deb should work across a lot of 64-bit Debian-based distros.
Re: Signal-Desktop encrypted communications package
@Stevo, thanks for the suggestion.
I'll move slowly on it, as I don't have too many people that I want to talk to these days...
I thought that others here may like to know of Signal's existence though, as it really does look like it is made of the right stuff. :)

Re: Signal-Desktop encrypted communications package
I'd be interested having Signal Messenger Desktop in the MX-Package-Installer.
Until now I found it in the Flatpaks section. I can recommend this messenger.
It's a very easy, comfortable and good alternative to Whatsapp.
"Recommended by Edward Snowden" :-)

Re: Signal-Desktop encrypted communications package
FWIW, I've been running Signal on MX for quite a while, now.
I've had no issues with it at all.

Re: Signal-Desktop encrypted communications package
So you haven't encountered the sandbox problem that's quite common now with Electron apps and Debian kernels that MX uses by default?
Re: Signal-Desktop encrypted communications package
Signal-Desktop requires that one owns a cell/smart phone. Correct? Aside from Skype, what other desktop apps are equivalent to Skype and which of them don't require ownership of a cell/smart phone?
[My sole OS is MX-19.1_x64.]

Re: Signal-Desktop encrypted communications package
Does Signal's Desktop app really require a cell phone, I thought it just required a cell number?
You want something that uses the Signal Protocol and end-to-end encryption. Avoid things like WhatsApp, Viber, Telegram, etc.
But, asking about a replace for Signal and or Skype is sort of weird in my opinion, both are very different in many ways.
If you are just simply looking for a Skype replacement you can try Jitsi.
