MX 19: VPN Unlimited install fails

#1 Post by K7AAY »

Trying to install the VPN Unlimited client in my favorite distro, MX-Linux 19.

https://www.vpnunlimitedapp.com/en/info ... /linux#id1 explains their standard process:

sudo dpkg -i VPN_Unlimited_4.23_trusty_amd64.deb && sudo apt-get -f install

The first command borks because these packages were not installed:

libcurl3
iproute
net-tools
strongswan
libstrongswan-extra-plugins
libcharon-extra-plugins
strongswan-plugin-eap-mschapv2

And, trying ti install those packages to resolve the dependencies fails as MX-Linux can't find them.

How might I install these packages so I can have secure browsing through public WiFi with my already paid-for VPN in MX-Linux 19?

Thank you kindly.

I would suggest asking VPN Unlimited how to install their software on Debian Buster, since you're paying for their service and are entitled to tech support from them.

Their response is "use Ubuntu" and I've already bought a license for their service in perpetuity so I'd like to make it work.

Their download page says their Linux version is for Debian GNU/Linux 8.0, Ubuntu 14.04+. Debian 8 (code name Jessie) isn't even supported by Debian anymore AFAIK. They either need to update their software to support the current stable version of Debian, which is Debian 10 (Buster) and is what MX-19 is based on, or you might want to consider getting a refund and shopping elsewhere for a VPN provider that offers better support for current mainstream Linux distros.

thank you for the excuse for no solution, although a solution would be highly more useful.

Why don't you try requesting that VPN Unlimited's .deb file for Jessie be forward-ported to MX-19 (or 18, or whatever version you're using) if possible and let the packaging team have a go? Post your request in the appropriate subforum for your version of MX underneath the MX Repositories forum in the Development category of the board. If they can do that the packagers will make the updated .deb file available to you, either directly or via the Test Repo. Then you can either install from the .deb file with gdebi or from the test repo in MX Package Installer.

I solved the problem but I use PIA or Private Internet Access which is a VPN that works perfectly in MX Linux -19

If this issue is not resolved and you are receiving no help from VPN Unlimited, it shows they are not a reparable VPN provider because they don't support what they sell. Demand a full refund. If they don't refund all your money I hope you used a credit card because you can have that charge removed by your credit card company because you never received what you paid for. I would also ask in this forum which VPN works on MX Linux. In my case I use Astrill VPN which installs easy and is a full G.U.I. VPN.

I am command line illiterate. I copy & paste to the terminal. Liars, Wiseguys, Trolls, and those without manners will be added to my ignore list.

I am going to assume you didn't mean for this to be semi-rude, please remember people giving up their free time to try and help. But ultimately KeepSolid needs to provide a working .deb and dependencies. :frown:

I have a VPN Unlimited lifetime license, but I don't use their .deb, I just connect the old fashioned way.

I will look into if they have source code available for repackaging, the dependencies issue, and what not.... but I don't have a lot of time to work on this right now though.
