MX rules Distrowatch

#1 Post by lonesomepoint »

I know Distrowatch hits mean only so much, but I'm not sure I've ever seen a distro lead the hit count so overwhelmingly.

It's also not a vote, it counts number of clicks on MX links, so as long MX is more of novelty than let's say Ubuntu than more people will be likely to click to get info about MX. Once people go "oh, I know what is MX and what these guys are doing" are probably not going to click, so in a way is a measure of lack of popularity.

by way of further comparison... I recently visited the Ubuntu forums and noted that they have over 2 million user accounts... so much for my useless data point. ;)

Page hit ranking numbers on Distrowatch like MX is experiencing has never been seen before. When Ubuntu first became very popular, and then Mint, in turn, they rose to the top but never outstripped other distributions in page hit count rankings to the magnitude like is happening now for MX. It obviously means something. Without a call home function and unique ID, or a requirement to register in order to use, there isn't any way to track number of users. That said, being at the top of the page hit ranking in Distrowatch, especially of the magnitude we see today, will lead to a lot of downloads. If they try it, they will like it.

I think it's more of a measure of increase in curiosity. Doesn't say anything about how many users already know about it, but it does say how many users want to know more.

i know its not much of a metric, though with what mx and antix stand for they honestly deserve it.

its still publicity.

I think it was 2004. I was using Mepis. I would read some folks mentioning Ubuntu. I tried Ubuntu, and was not impressed, and thought it would never go anywhere. Obviously, I was wrong. I prefer Debian stable over Ubuntu, and, in my opinion MX is a better distro. Like Debian, it just works. I thought MX 19 was going to be a little bumpy at first, but it's fine now, and will probably continue to improve just as the 18 series did. I think it will continue to stay high up on Distrowatch.

Pre-intalled in thousands of machines around the world. You gotta have many user accounts. 1% of them visit MX makes a difference.
